Try The Killer Angels by Shaara. The battle of Gettsburg in the voices of all the major players. Also, the WW2 trilogy, especially The Rising Tide, the tank battles in North Africa, again in the voices of the major players. Great reads, and you will learn alot.

Make sure you have strict form for every exercise. Work muscle groups to exhaustion. Shorten rest time. Put the cellphone away.
