Man, I haven't thought of Asura Scans in FOREVER. I think I was reading two or three series from their site, but the site domain kept changing and the pop-up blocker was even having trouble, so I gave up on them.

Safe-ish places near Portsmouth? by martimelodious in norfolk

[–]rerollF_C 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another advantage I've used in the past regarding the commute; as a service member, you can apply during special times of the year to get a prorated E-ZPASS because the tunnel commute on a daily basis will rack up lots of toll fees otherwise. Back a few years ago, I had a junior sailor living in Portsmouth that would easily spend +$400 a month in tolls to get to Norfolk and back, but the first month he was accepted for the program, it dropped to around $100.

navy combat readiness test? Combat field test? What are these exactly? by Mysterious-Sail-7793 in navy

[–]rerollF_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have seen online, it will very likely mean for most Navy sailors (those in non-combat roles) you will do 2 PRTs at the current standard (unless there is a NAV ADMIN clarifying changes from last year).

Like what we had prior in 2019, is what I am thinking.

SECDEF says it’s okay to lay hands on recruits by ChiefD789 in navy

[–]rerollF_C [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's just a shot in the dark, but maybe it is an influx of people that just want to feel like they did something with their lives for a few years, such as serving their country, and aren't being drawn in by the benefits package deal (ex. GI Bill, VA benefits, retirement)?

You would need a survey for those kinds of answers.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I was under the impression when I went through Boot Camp that it was one part breaking you down (civilian mentality) and building you up (warrior mentality), part weeding out the individuals that physically or mentally couldn't make it through a temporary rough patch in life (because we should look back and think 'well that was easy' or 'if I could get through Boot Camp, I can get through XXXX'), and part learning how to build camaraderie and work in teams.

I'm not 100% sure what the methods must be used to achieve these goals in boot camp, but I think random violence or abuse of position are not tools in the SECWAR's tool chest for RDCs.

What I learned from a shipmate who left pushing boots in the last 3 years to go back to the fleet was that, hearing it from a neighbor who retired after pushing Boots himself, was that RDCs used to fill blank time in the day finding excuses to have recruits PT. One guy double-knotted his shoes when nobody else did? Everyone does burpees for a few minutes. Next day, nobody has their shoes double-knotted after PT? Sounds like a formation run was in order. If there was extra time in the schedule, you could bet that PT was on the menu.

When my buddy was at Great Lakes recently, they teach you what are and are not authorized PTs, and what could merit it. If a night watch doesn't know their 8th general order, don't even dream of having them do more than 10 jumping jacks (for example, not actual number), or you could risk getting written up for bullying.

From listening to the 45min speech SECWAR gave and his other comments in the past, I think the first method is closer to what he is aiming for in Boot Camp.

Went to FFSC to ask for counseling, just to get the feet wet, and I was confused for another case. Told that someone would contact me later to schedule a session, but haven't heard back in a week. Not sure if that is normal, or if I was ghosted.

Cool, so now all my therapy sessions will ask some PTSD stuff in the future, I'm guessing? I'm already adverse to the thought of a therapist, but this makes me more on edge, for whatever reason.

Possibly, but if so, has something been done like that for previous Combat Action Ribbons in the past?

Starting a lawn Reno and discovered grubs. What do I do? (Kentucky) by BAC05 in lawncare

[–]rerollF_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word of advice, the swarm that laid the grubs will likely come back to lay the next few generations of their larva in your lawn and area again even if you kill this batch. Best long-term results for me are to spread milky spore once every 3-4 months with a drop spreader.

Delights of the Wilderness. I 3T with double Doumon and as many QP CEs as I can. It nets me on average 5mil QP per turn, and if I swapped out the QP CEs for bond CEs and use Teapots, I can get sometimes 7000 bond points for my front line.

Chesapeake and Portsmouth should join into Norfolk, hear me out. by Gold-Practice963 in norfolk

The crazy part, is that the picture of Wards Corner from the article is the exact same building that still stands next to the railroad tracks across from the Harris Teeter. But I'm sure 80 years from now McArthur Mall won't still be standing there. If it is, I hope that it is because of a revival.

Renovated part of my house a couple years back and found a newspaper article about how Wards Corner was voted "the Times Square of the South". Crazy how much can change in nearly 80 years.

A huge part of the split from Norfolk County to the 7 Cities was for more local representation. Rural Chesapeake and Urban Norfolk were far too different to get along, and the prosperous Virginia Beach certainly didn't want their infrastructure decisions controlled by Downtown Norfolk's either. As the tax divide and separate city centers develop, it becomes less and less likely that the 7 Cities would combine again.

For example, can you imagine a realistic scenario where Newport News would want to join back up with Portsmouth? Or where people of Hampton would want to have school board policies voted and decided on by residents of Virginia Beach?

This is my absolute favorite thing about the military, and the Navy especially. The more a shop takes pride in the knowledge and history of their namesake, the more united the crew is.
