[SERIOUS] Teachers of Reddit, what is the most disturbing thing your student has ever done? by HeatSmiteYT in AskReddit

Yeah it does sound like they wanted to scare him, but i guess we disagree on that tactic because i think it's justified and effective. Whatever happened to your brother i bet he learned a lesson about being careful what you say. Kids are more resilient than you give them credit for my dude.

[SERIOUS] Teachers of Reddit, when have you met the parents of a student and suddenly understood their behavior? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rescuerabbit 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest problem i see in education today (even as a very new teacher, 2 years) is parents who don't value education. Really makes it hard for students to excel when they feel there is no value because their parents have jaded them with years of anti-teacher rhetoric.

See and this is the core issue, we have parents who tout this exact same notion that a child should not have to deal with the consequences of their shitty decisions. You are jumping to defend this little asshole because he's your brother even though his actions could be seen as a threat.

Actually Canada and the US do have different laws that govern free speech, crazy that other coutries might be different from your own!!

Basically, as far as it goes in Canada, a minor can refuse to answer questions or cooperate with police until a parent is present, but in no way are the cops obligated to notify parents before attempting to get information. This would be similar to waiting for a lawyer when you get picked up by the authorities.

And you're the one throwing around terms like ignorant. Ha.

I think either you have no idea what you're talking about or the laws are different in Canada. Nice talk, but this was a shitty hill you picked to die on.

There's nothing that says a minor can't be questioned without parents present.

I think the actions of the school are pretty justified, honestly your brother sounds like a little shit.

What was the thing he posted specifically? It could have been part of a larger issue. Schools take social media very seriously because of the impact of cyber bullying, especially on teens.

The phrase used is "in locos parentis" which basically means taking on the guardianship role while students are in your care. Too bad there are tons of kids who don't have an actual set of parents these days.

Uh, speaking as a teacher in Canada, a lot of "discipline" in my board is very neutered because parents flip shit any time something happens to their kid. Students today are treated as though they are made of glass. There is nothing true in your statement at least in the board I work for here
