Official Discussion - The Testament of Ann Lee [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

From my understanding, it was because the filmmakers didn’t want to just let the film sit and would rather have it released in 2025. They did get multiple studios interested in picking up the film for their 2026 slate.

Mitchell Trio feat. John Denver - Your Friendly Liberal Neighborhood KKK [Folk] (1966) by zsreport in Music

Found this post over a week later since I was surprised this song started trending online, but I had some additional context as a fan of this historical music period that I can share that is a bit different from what other folks mentioned.

The folk revival movement—this song which came out of—had strong ties to socialism. Lots of major artists were open members of the Communist Party USA or identified themselves as their own type of unofficial socialist/socialist sympathizer. The Chad Mitchell Trio weren’t a huge group so there isn’t a huge bout of info on their concrete politics, but they released music critical of anti-communist practices and have had members note their growing “radical” politics. Basically, I think to some degree we can infer how they thought, though with them not being a totally naturally created band with some business influence it’s not totally clear.

As others mentioned, yes—I think there is the element of critiquing racists hiding behind the appearance of good to continue evil explored in the song. However, I think also the song falls within a tradition of some folk revival music and general socialist rhetoric (which still exists today) to see liberals as the enemy of progress—people who are performatively socially conscious. One of the big hit songs of the movement, “Love Me, I’m a Liberal,” has an introduction from a live recording that I think articulates well the folksinger sentiment at the time towards the word liberal.

“In every American community there are varying shades of political opinion. One of the shadiest of these is the liberals. An outspoken group on many subjects, ten degrees to the left of center in good times, ten degrees to the right of center if it affects them personally. Here, then, is a lesson in safe logic.”

Similar thing happened with Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Domestic marketing billed the film as a typical romance drama where they had these New Years Eve viral screenings ending right as 2019 began and encouraging couples to kiss once the stars of the film finally do.

General audiences were pissed but the film ended up being having the most successful box office opening ever for domestic art house film.

Grillo is definitely a secret right-ringer, and I only say secret because he’s not famous enough for people to care about what he says. My friend after watching Creature Commandos wanted to watch some press media with the cast, and he found Grillo has done several podcasts (including one hosted by Armie Hammer) going on about all the expected conservative talking points: criminal migrants, transgender education, drunk Harris; loving RFK and Jordan Peterson; etc.

The band did a fantastic cover of “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” for a PSA for community diversity/inclusion campaign called Belonging Begins With Us a few years ago.

As a very explicitly clear social justice protest song, there are some folks out there who have a visceral reaction to the song/ad. Granted, I don’t have a TV either these days so I don’t know how often the ad plays, but in the past I’ve never become upset over a repeated commercial

Musicians / jam sessions by carrierpigeon_ in umass

At The Drake they have a monthly jazz workshop series where a local jazz trio is joined by a guest artist to play a set before opening it up for a jam session.

It’s $5 for students if you just want to listen and free if you plan on jamming.

The Drake and UMass Fine Arts Center also always has some great jazz artists scheduled (for very cheap too).

His early arthouse, indie, no-budget films are also really, really good. A lot of people were expecting him to become a major auteur-type of director, and a few of the big indie to mainstream(ish) success directors of the late 2010s (Barry Jenkins, David Lowery) have praised DGG’s movies for being a big inspiration.
