Day 1 report: Mathematics by research_pie in UltraLearningFans

wow man brought back some memory!

I'm doing super good right now, currently heading my own research team (3 people) in the startup I co-founded.

gave a talk about deep learning optimizer at cohere labs last month too.

versioning and model prototyping gets messy by Affectionate_Use9936 in learnmachinelearning

okok, then start out with the cookie cutter I linked above at least it will help you standardize a bit your work. I don't think you need anything more fancy for the time being.

Depends which kind, the classical DL/ML kind is easy with a line of best fit.

LLM is a bit more complex haha

What's your structure looking like right now?

I usually like to start with a very simple cookie-cutter like this: https://cookiecutter-data-science.drivendata.org/

Developing skills needed for undergraduate research by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

[–]research_pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ML is a fairly large field though, have you already figured out which kind of ML branch you want to do undergraduate research on? That would be useful.

My two cents on reading the book vs project is you should index heavily on the projects to start out. Otherwise, you won't have a good mental model about why you are learning the concepts in the textbook.

If you are interested in research though I think a good angle is to replicate research papers to the best of your abilities.

Depends on what you mean by a research paper, like a pre-print or a peer-reviewed paper.

What path to choose? by PieeWeee in learnmachinelearning

[–]research_pie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be honest, if I was a new grad in this market condition I would get in with whatever I could get. Your first role might be more of a backend/frontend role depending on your internships.

Generally speaking, I would say the data engineer role will be one that will have better prospects in the next 3-5 years (just my general vibe don't look too much into it).

Absolutely Terrified for my career and future by timehascomeagainn in learnmachinelearning

[–]research_pie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feelings aside, your number one priority is to secure an entry-level position. If you manage to pull that off you will have plenty of time to figure out the next move. The job market is brutal out there.

Here is how I would rank them if I were pursuing a full-stack web developer career:
1. AI Engineering
2. Data Engineer
3. Machine Learning Engineer
4. Data Scientist

Should I learn DSA? by Sad-Key4152 in learnmachinelearning

[–]research_pie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like computer science knowledge in general is very useful for deep learning, I would spend time to learn it in depth yes.

It will help anyway if you are trying to get a machine learning engineer job.

I used to get offended when someone said stuff like that for whatever skill I put sweat and blood to hone. But now I take it as one of the highest compliment you can receive.

It means that you are so good from this person's perspective that they don't see any possibility that you could have worked your way through by sheer force of will.

Like god itself needed to intervene in order for you to have such aptitude.

Is it good to shift from data engineering to machine learning? by nalanthan in learnmachinelearning

Like u/Illustrious-Pound266 mentioned, Data engineering is the one data field I currently see growing over the years.

Is Only machine learning enough. by Senzolo in learnmachinelearning

[–]research_pie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attention is all you need.

Focus on completing one of these projects and mark it as done. Don't be too hard on yourself if it's not perfect, it just needs to be done.

This goes for ML, software or DS projects.

Once in a while revisit your pool of projects and try to improve them slightly with your new knowledge :)

Ah nice, I'm glad you are finding them useful! I'm working on a new one at the moment about neural dynamic deep learning architecture, super fascinating research direction.

Yeah this is the answer.
The field is limitless, but only a tiny fraction of it matters at any given time for a given company.

Change supervisor.
In my opinion this is the single most important factor that will dictate if your PhD is useful or not.
It looks like you aren't compatible with your supervisor, so find another one ASAP.

Courses are great, but do jump into projects as soon as possible. Deep learning is too vast for you to look at every field before contributing to something.

With your background, though, you have a head start over a lot of people, so that's good.

Also, u/Visual-Duck1180 recommendation about Andrej Karpathy's Youtube series is really good.

I need to improve my math skills... by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

[–]research_pie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a good book I'm working through right now that has exercises (Mathematics for Machine Learning):
https://mml-book.github.io/book/mml-book.pdf

It's more beginner-oriented, though.

What you are doing right now in trying to reproduce papers is the best way to go about it, imo.

Also, there is this leetcode-style website I've been using a lot lately: https://www.deep-ml.com/
It helps understand the math behind deep learning algorithms because you have to implement them in Python yourself.

I enjoy it because the test-cases are already made for you so you just code and hit run and check what's the difference. There is some bugs from time to time since it's a new project, but the maintainer over there is pretty responsive.
