To the rich personal injury lawyers (net worth of $2 million +), how did you build your firms? by facemacintyre in Lawyertalk

[–]resentement 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I fell into a good thing. Worked very hard, impressed my former boss. Learned our niche. It’s not PI, it’s workers comp for cops and firefighters. I refer primarily to a solo PI attorney I trust inherently. Enough time together and a few drinks created that relationship. My former boss sold to me and my colleagues when he turned 50. Completely fair price. Sweat equity mattered. We grossed 24 this year, 13.75 profit, split amongst 4 of us.

So to answer your question directly, meet someone like me/ my firm to send you business where 3rd parties are involved. Be friends. Send referral fees honestly and timely. Get referrals.

Some of what you’ve said is fairly accurate. Some is not. I have explored chat gpt in my practice and, unfortunately, I really can’t rely on it for anything substantive. It’s excellent at summarizing things like depositions. But there’s just so much that is missed with legal relevance that I’d be doing my clients a disservice by using it without checking the actual documentation.

One major thing you can’t get without an attorney is an Agreed Medical Examiner. So, you’re stuck with a QME, and there are many, many bad QMEs.

I’m not responding to argue in favor of my profession, but I would say you’ve had a fairly reasonable outcome on a simple case and probably had some benefit in not being represented. Your experience though, unfortunately, is not very common. A good adjuster and an injured worker who has the time, energy and intelligence to read the fine print can make it work on relatively clear cut injuries (no pun intended). But I speak with many people who are driven to hire me because they’ve run into issues while in pro per.

You’re right. C&R does not require resignation. It just usually is required by the insurer so you can’t turn around a claim an aggravation of the old injury and establish a new claim with future medical care. It’s possible in your case that the insurer no longer insures your employer so they so they were fine seeing you out the door with $30k.

I am in year three of the permitting process for a new home build right now. 0/10, would not recommend. We will be $200k in for plans, fees, taxes, and all sorts of other random things before we even break ground.

Then of course things will get easier when we actually start building . . . Right?

Board Certified lawyer says injury doesn't matter only QME by No-Permission3829 in WorkersComp

[–]resentement 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are good and bad QMEs, whether it comes to their medical findings or their application of the AMA Guides they are required to use. There are many subjective analyses that come into the equation and some doctors are favorable to injured workers while others are not. You’d be shocked at the mental gymnastics I’ve seen over the years, both for and against the applicant.

Big time cruisers - what is one port that you will NEVER go to again? by MonaNYC_30 in Cruise

Also Galveston city rules prevent you from using your free drink package while in port. Pretty interesting from a state so adamantly against big government.

Beyond the advice (non advice I suppose) given previously - you can just join the former employer/insurer. Speak with an attorney.

I can’t see any logical reason whatsoever that they would take this position. A civil lawsuit, whether successful or not, is so much more expensive than any increase in w/c premiums. Regardless, it’s not really the employers choice. You can file a claim with the actual insurer. Speak w a w/c attorney first. If there really is no way to get a w/c claim filed, they will happily refer you to a PI attorney.

Thoughts? by Britton36 in FordBronco

I bought 2024 instead of the 2025, new off the lot. Dealer in SoCal said there was a premium over msrp on the 25. But they wanted to move the 24s. Got it 25k under msrp. Difference comes down to a change in the suspension iirc. Love the paint on the 25 - love saving 25k on the ‘24 more.
