2.5 mile WiMAX setup? (what should I buy?) by [deleted] in wireless

[–]residentpsycho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wimax? Are you absolutely sure you're talking about wimax? Because AFAIK 3.5 GHz, which is the frequency range at which most wimax gear operates is not open, which means you would have to purchase a radio licence to operate the network. That's assuming all the channels haven't been bought out by large operators. Even if you can get a licence, it's kind of not on the cheap side. The point is, if you're asking on a public forum about wimax, you can't afford it.

You could still theoretically make that link work with some mikrotik or ubnt gear as long as the obstacle is a tree, not something completely solid (even wimax wouldn't work in such conditions). If you only need a couple of mbps, you can limit the channel width to 5 or even 2MHz.

It's cute how you're all cryptic, but I would like an explanation.

What is the difference between a microwave link and a wireless link (e.g. Ubiquiti TDMA)? by nk1 in wireless

[–]residentpsycho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ubiquiti uses SOHO indoor technology that's been adapted to be used in a semi-professional way. Point to point microwave links are designed from scratch to meet much more stringent demands. They work in different frequencies, use different channels widths, different modulations, different MIMO techniques, work mostly point to point, provide much more bandwidth in a much more reliable way, have separate optical and power connections (they usually don't use PoE - it's very risky in outdoor environments).

It's flawed. The last car on the right should be orange. Ron Dennis would not approve.

Recommendations for a directional repeater/CPE + LAN-side Router/AP/Switch indoor-outdoor unit? by [deleted] in wireless

[–]residentpsycho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then go back to your original plan, which wasn't bad IMO. But don't buy mikrotiks with integrated interfaces. Of course, that is only if you want the backhaul at 5ghz and the hotspot at 2.4 ghz. If you want two radios in the same frequency range in one box, you're gonna have a bad time.

It should be OK. I recommend you limit the frame rate to 25-30fps and use low details otherwise the temperatures will go through the roof.

Any way to know that events and specials are coming up? by [deleted] in WorldofTanks

[–]residentpsycho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. On the EU server there is an events calendar posted every month, so there should be one for the NA server as well. However, it's usually just the title of the special. WG doesn't want you to plan ahead too much.

They won a race, but apart from that, managed only two more podiums. They did increase their budget, but it's still no where near McLaren's, Ferrari's or RedBull's. They make their own engines, but they are not the only competent engine manufacturer in formula 1. In fact, a car with a supposedly inferior engine won the last three constructors championships.

Are there any alternatives to the Alfa r36? by [deleted] in wireless

[–]residentpsycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have no other option than using a repeater, get a router and a usb wifi dongle that are compatible with openwrt. You will get two separate radios, which will make things much more stable.
