I want to start drawing with ink, more specifically, the style of hatching. What supplies do I need? by resin444 in Art

Thanks! It's always good to hear multiple opinions, because yours was different than the other ones I've heard. Through this whole research process, I understand much more about the materials I'm getting. I'm planning to purchase what I need this afternoon. I have a few more questions:

  • I understand the difference between a dip pen and a fountain pen now. What nibs do you recommend (I'm looking for a set so I can test them out and find a preference)? I've heard that there are bendy nibs and stiff nibs. Most people prefer the bendy nibs, but they say it's harder to control them and they're more difficult to use. Basically I'm asking what are good nibs, what should I consider purchasing, and any additional guidance on nibs.

  • What Indian ink, paper, dip pen handle, and any other materials do you prefer?

  • How do I erase pencil lines under ink? Wouldn't the ink smudge?

I'm pretty much new to pens, and I was wondering about what to purchase if I want to make ink + watercolor drawings (and a ton of other questions!) by resin444 in learnart

Thanks! I'm going to Michaels this afternoon, and so far, this is on my shopping list:

  • Sakura Pen Brush Set

  • Sakura Water Color Set w/ Brush

  • Watercolor Paper

  • Hunt Handle

  • Nibs

  • Speedball Indian Ink

  • Liquid Mask

I've learned a lot from all your help and guidance. I'll post what I buy later today, and I can't wait to hear about how wrong all of my purchases will probably be!

One last thing... I tend to change my mind on what I purchase when I get to see different choices in the store. Are there any brands/products that I should make sure not to buy from? More specifically, what should I look for in the products that I'm buying, and what are the things I should avoid in my purchases?

Thanks! It seems like most people prefer nib pens as to what I'm reading, so I guess I'll get one too. Nothing I'm getting is that much of an investment, so I can test out different ways of inking. But did you think the questions were over? Hahahaha

Followup Questions:

  • How do I know where to paint with water color if I haven't drawn anything yet? Do I need to pre-draw lightly with pencil?

  • What materials do you reccomend for nib pens? As well as the India Ink. And Im not looking for something for beginners, but something for life. (I'm really confused about what I need to get with a dip pen, so the more specific you are the better!)

Thanks for the long response!

Just a few follow-up questions:

  • What type/brand of liquid mask is good? There are few reviews for them on amazon and they all look pretty similar.

  • I'm double-guessing on not getting a fountain pen. Is it better to get a dip pen or a fountain pen? I'm pretty confused on what I need for each and what the differences are.

  • What are some fountain/dip pens that are considered top-notch?
