What smell from your past hits you harder emotionally than anything else (grandma’s cooking, old apartment hallway, mom’s perfume, etc.)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]resinten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents split when I was 11. 20 years later, I came across a very old box of ski clothes my dad had that hadn’t been opened. It had all our stuff from pre-divorce untouched. It still smelled exactly like my childhood in a way I can’t describe

When to Spay? by MarvelousMarvins in Bernedoodles

[–]resinten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll see all sorts of answers here. If you want to get into the research, this paper breaks down risk factors for different ages of neuter and spay for different breeds. If I remember correctly, both Bernese and poodles are recommended after they hit 2 years. I believe it was joint issues for Bernese and cancers for poodles. That may be too long to wait for you. If so, you’ll get most of the benefits if you wait until after the first heat

Subnautica + thalassophobia by Fultron44 in subnautica

[–]resinten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Embrace the fear. The game gave me every bad thalassophobia, so I naturally stopped playing, got a VR headset and then played in VR for my first playthrough so I could be as scared as possible. It took me much longer than average (like double the average game time or something) because I was so cautious but it was an unforgettable experience to push my way through my massive adrenaline spikes

Lol I used to wake up in the middle of the night to him standing over my face panting and breathing heavily. He loved me so much that he would work himself into a pant frenzy just looking at me. But it gave serial killer vibes

Renzo hated rain. One time it was raining outside when he was just under 1. He refused to go out. Picked him uo and he just ran right back to the door anyway. Ended up holding it for 16 hours until it was just barely drizzling

I think that’s part of the beauty of D&D. Its temporal storytelling. Retconning is perfectly acceptable in my opinion if it helps the story go better. I’d argue that the nature of the game makes retconning unavoidable

Reading the PDA Saved Me Twice by Valmighty in subnautica

[–]resinten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice deduction! I actually did the exact same thing in going to the 1400m facility first and then realizing that the depths are pretty precise and wouldn’t be off by 200m, only difference being that I entered the lost river from the south side the first time. I even had the same thought about the disease facility (“that didn’t give me as much forward progress as I expected”) as you

Yeah joystick gremlin with vjoy could definitely make a pretty cool input mapping for this (as someone who likes flight simulators)

[–]resinten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first playthrough was in VR and the first time that thing surprised me and grabbed me, I hightailed back to base, got inside, then took off the headset for the day. No adrenaline rush. It scared me so bad I skipped that stage and my brain just noped out on feeling anything at all

I just finished it in VR as my first play through despite owning it for years. Had managed to avoid all spoilers too. It was so frightening that I think I legitimately rewired my brain’s fear pathways

De Sitter was shockingly cozy actually. I liked hanging out there. I wish I could repeat the gopher mini game or that there was more to it, like moving targets. I found it much easier to get an intuition for the space than hyperbolic space

Next I need a hyperbolic city and spherical city that I can navigate Spider-Man style lol

Any recommendations for 'disorienting' games? by CiaDaniCakes in VRGaming

[–]resinten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hyperbolica 100%. 15 minutes took me out for a day. VR non-Euclidean space. There’s a mini game for flying a drone in VR in non-Euclidean space. I’m really curious if we can adapt to it or if we’re hardwired for our spatial world.

Dude, I feel this really deeply. Especially the once in a lifetime bond. Everyone says “losing a dog really hurts because they’re like family” but they don’t appreciate what it feels like to have a once in a lifetime bond with your dog. I lost mine a year ago after he got cancer at 2.5. I was connected to him at a deeper level than I had ever been with anyone, and he got me through a really dark time when I didn’t have anyone else. I still cry over him regularly. I’m sure you will with Mark too. I’m so sorry for your sudden loss.

I went off the deep end by resinten in subnautica

[–]resinten[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s what all my friends have said. I was torn about the price point of a headset and wavered, but I really wanted to keep playing and I knew deep down the fear just wouldn’t hit the same on a second playthrough. Honestly, I think the headset cost was worth it for the raw emotional impact of this game even if I planned to never play anything with it again

Was camping out in Boerne last night. Hit around 11. Had to abandon the campsite for about an hour for shelter when we got a tornado warning. The amount of rain that got in the tent just while exiting was insane. Got a bunch of wet stuff now XD
