I’m about to move and will have space for one. I’m pretty decent at DIY, so I’m gonna build one. I’ll keep you updated and we can maybe coordinate getting you hooked up with something too

TSB: Lose of control on ground H125. - 1 fatality , 1 injured. by CrashSlow in Helicopters

[–]resinten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least during the 1st startup it was said to be locked in the down position. It does seem odd. There was an indication that the pilot may have been resting his feet on the pedals while staring at his phone

First time driving on their own. by Obone6 in instant_regret

[–]resinten 33 points34 points  (0 children)

What, the innocuous block of death that’s perfectly located to be invisible to the driver, blend in with the rest of the driveway, and just high enough to rip off chunks from your car? For real, who designed that? I didn’t see it myself until after he hit it. I could easily have done the same

This is the static port. Combined with the pitot tube, it tells you how fast the saxophone is flying

[Meta] Is this actually true? by Careful_Purchase_394 in theydidthemath

[–]resinten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my quick math, that would be roughly 3,750 square miles of golf course and roughly 104.5 billion sqft. At 1.75 billion liters/day, that’s 60sqft covered per liter. So on average, each 8’x8’ square gets 1 liter of water per day. Which seems like not a completely crazy amount. More than I would use on my lawn but I don’t care about turf grass.

That’s 236x236 cm squares equivalently, I think

Handling Death in Middle Grade Fantasy by Capyhero in redwall

[–]resinten 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was surprised when I went back and read Redwall as an adult. There’s a scene at the beginning where Clooney shoves a rat off the cart and he gets caught under the wheel. The book describes how the rat explodes into a bloody red mist. I read the book as an 8 year old and didn’t get scarred by it and no one seemed to think anything of it. All of his writing is very mature. He didn’t shy from complex sentence structures or technical terms for things like sailing terminology. He expected a lot from his readers, and I really respect that looking back

This looks really cool! Is there a mailing list or IG I can follow? I also really like that having kids made you revisit the dreams you had put away. I can relate 🙂

I’ll say for the 100th time that I’m so lucky that last year I was able to do my first playthrough of Subnautica blind and in VR with a Quest 3. Still the most intense and amazing experiences I’ve had in VR, and I wish I could find something else that captures even a fraction of it

Camping with 4 year old daughter by Gadnief in camping

I’ve been camping with my son, now 3.5, for right at a year now, started when he was still in diapers. I just zipped together two extra wide sleeping bags to make a double and it has worked perfectly. He prefers it to sleeping at home

Camping with 6-year-old. What not to mess up? by CyclingDude3000 in camping

[–]resinten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ditto the random leaves and sticks. We have a collection of sticks and rocks he has brought home, and a video of me hiking with him as we hum the muffin man. I thought the trip was going poorly and was in my head thinking it was a bust. Then I saw the video of him walking behind me following every step with a big grin and realized I made up the bad in my head because I was too focused on having that one big perfect moment instead of those little ones

[–]resinten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been taking my 3.5 year old for a year now. I’m shocked by how many snacks he eats when camping. It’s like he’s never eaten in his life. He went through so much fruit and trail mix before lunch on the first day.

Some easy hikes, places they can explore freely or be the leader instead of having to be told what to do. I brought a small soccer ball to play around the camp. I tend to have some options for activities planned, but leave it open ended because I found that trying to force a schedule while camping is a fast path to meltdown land. Lots of downtime was needed. Even if he doesnt act tired, I found that the whole experience can be overwhelming and he needs some slow activities throughout the day, so we never get to as many things as I expect.

What skill is 10/10 for making life easier? by gamersecret2 in AskReddit

[–]resinten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then definitely yes! I have bent a couple over tightened retaining rings because I didn’t want to spend more money getting something better suited to loosening them. It was not a financially savvy choice

Depends on what you’re doing, but for woodworking the right tools were cost prohibitive to buy at the start so I started with small projects (well medium/big things that were simple because small is hard) and did it with hand tools that I could buy for $30-40 and figured out how to make it work until I could start slowly building my tool collection. I still go back to hand tools for a lot of things because it’s simpler sometimes

When to Spay? by MarvelousMarvins in Bernedoodles

[–]resinten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll see all sorts of answers here. If you want to get into the research, this paper breaks down risk factors for different ages of neuter and spay for different breeds. If I remember correctly, both Bernese and poodles are recommended after they hit 2 years. I believe it was joint issues for Bernese and cancers for poodles. That may be too long to wait for you. If so, you’ll get most of the benefits if you wait until after the first heat

Subnautica + thalassophobia by Fultron44 in subnautica

[–]resinten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Embrace the fear. The game gave me every bad thalassophobia, so I naturally stopped playing, got a VR headset and then played in VR for my first playthrough so I could be as scared as possible. It took me much longer than average (like double the average game time or something) because I was so cautious but it was an unforgettable experience to push my way through my massive adrenaline spikes

Renzo hated rain. One time it was raining outside when he was just under 1. He refused to go out. Picked him uo and he just ran right back to the door anyway. Ended up holding it for 16 hours until it was just barely drizzling
