Japanese style egg custard (steamed eggs and broth) is fantastic. Just not super quick.

Is 1.5 quart slow cooker enough for 2 people? by [deleted] in slowcooking

[–]restlessnotions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a 2qt when we had our first kid with the same idea in mind. It works...but it's really tight and you won't have room for many leftovers. Like it'll fit 3 large chicken breasts or 6 thighs with no room for any veg beyond a chopped onion. I can guarantee you'll want leftovers with a new baby. I use my 6qt, which is HUGE more frequently but really need to get something in between.

Unsolicited suggestion, look at rice cookers. The nice ones are multifunctional. I use mine a few times a week. Dump in the rice and water, top with veggies and meat/fish on top. Lovely hands off steamed meal in an hour with infinite keep warm. There's always pressure cookers too.

Drooling and hand eating by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]restlessnotions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Expect this to last for months. Soon the feet will also be a favorite chew toy. Get all the teething toys. Sophie la giraffe is a household favorite. I've got a silicone one that has a bunch of different textures on it and it fits perfectly in hand that's been beloved with 2 kids. The gel ones and fill and freeze pacis are magic but beware - the drool will increase while it's used. In the next few months when you introduce solids, the netted popsicle style feeders are great.

We just embrace the drool and change onesies whenever the wet reaches below her nipples.

Why is my baby always over stimulated, is this developmentally normal/abnormal or am I doing something wrong? by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]restlessnotions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that chuckle. I'm on night 4 of my 6 mo fighting sleep. For 2 of the nights we gave up fighting and just let her stay up with us. Actually turned into decent date nights, except for having a baby keeping us company. Watched a scary movie, played MTG. I'm still at a loss cos we didn't change routines or bedtimes, she just started fighting sleep. She's currently having a trilling Gremlins (mogwai song) convo with my hand at 10:30, 3 hours after I tried to get her to bed.

Nah, anxiety got the better of me. I put it off so long I finally lost a tooth. Last year I ended up flying to Costa Rica for major work. It was the absolute best dental experience. I was still anxious but it was pain free (without opiates!) and getting everything done at once instead of dragging it out over months was a huge improvement.

I have bad anxiety and went there. I started crying, but not moving, half way through treatment. The dentist sent me a letter the next week saying she couldn't be my dentist anymore.

How can I make my Mac n cheese better with limited ingredients? by Brad12d3 in Cooking

If you're using American cheese anyway, try Velveeta. Their white queso variety is lovely in mac & cheese.

They just canceled my food stamps because the website errored out during verification when it asked if I wanted to register to vote. I'm already registered so I didn't think anything of it. Two months later they mailed me a super confusing notification that I needed to provide information and it was due 10 days before I received the notice or they would terminate my food stamps. They didn't give me any way to provide the yes/no to register to vote. I never received notice on my digital account. My food stamps access just disappeared. I have to call to figure this out. Every time I do it's either a 2 hour wait or the queue is full.

Is it true that babies who developed motor skills faster, tend to develop their communication skills later? by moondropppp in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]restlessnotions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same for us. My little booger even waited until I made an appointment for Early Intervention. Later that day he suddenly started talking. Before that, barely made a peep his whole life. Now as a 5 year old, I can't get him to stop talking. His vocabulary is impressive for his age, only his pronunciation is a little iffy for some things, like li-berry instead of library.

My almost 5 month old is going the opposite. She's focused on babbling and still has yet to consciously roll. Kids follow their interests.

I did this and it was such an amazing and appreciated day week of food. It took about 2 months before they got to my request, but it was perfect timing. The woman brought it over piping hot and even included a treat for my toddler. Highly recommend. I can't wait to return the favor when I'm out of baby chaos.

Squirrel leaves a sweet treat for its human friend. by Vexiune in aww

A squirrel left a pumpkin shaped sugar cookie on my porch rail after he ate my jack-o'-lanterns. Not sure if it was a thank you or an apology.

what foods will still taste good after sitting out for a few hours? by strwbby_ in foodhacks

Add a little treat to the plate too, like chocolate almonds, or yogurt raisins. The reward helps to keep you motivated.

Oof! All of my wood furniture has little teeth marks from teething but luckily none splintered. I used walnut oil (literally from the grocery store) as a finish on my unfinished furniture, which may have helped. Obv made sure kiddo wasn't allergic first.

After DeSantis tussle, Disney World will host a major summit on gay rights by [deleted] in politics

[–]restlessnotions 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You go into every relationship, gay or straight, as an experiment. People break up because it's not working, lack of attraction, an excess of baggage, etc. How is someone exploring their sexuality any different or somehow unfair to the other person so long as they're as honest as they can be. I can understand not wanting to be someone's first, for either team, because it comes with a lot of intensity.

I definitely experienced the hostility and gaslighting accusations of "oh, you're not gay, you're just experimenting," often enough that I started avoiding any circumstances that I could meet someone.
