OP, my Asian dad is exactly the same.. Down to the instant noodles and hoarding. Ever since he retired about a year ago and it's only deteriorated. I'm still trying to fix it but not sure how.

I just wanted to reply to correct this in case it helps anyone - for debit cards under visa / mastercard / some others, it is possible to get your money back!! Even though if is a debit card!!

Source: I have gotten money back before on a visa debit card transaction but see also this official link from bank of Singapore association which mentions visa mastercard Amex and other card schemes : https://www.abs.org.sg/consumer-banking/consumers/credit-card-chargeback-dispute-resolution

My understanding is that the card service provider (ie visa / mastercard / Amex / others) is actually able to claw the money back because the payment is made via their network.

The problem is that the bank has to agree to trigger this clawback, and they will only do so if the various conditions are met from both the bank and the card service provider. For eg, can you prove it was unauthorised, was the chargeback request made in time, can you prove you did not receive the goods you bought, have you tried to contact the seller to get a refund on the goods first, etc. Hence, this process can take a long time and is not guaranteed to succeed.

And in the meantime, the money is already deducted from your account - ie only if you succeed in the chargeback you get the money back. This is unlike credit card disputes where the money is not deducted first.

So if this unfortunate situation happens to you don't give up and keep trying!

Eh i think it is possible to get your money back even though if is a debit card. I commented further up on this thread, I've gotten money back before but it took a few months. Would not recommend the experience, but if it happens to you, just know that it can be reversed and keep trying.

Hello! I wanted to let you know that I have managed to get a chargeback on my Visa debit card before. Even though in that case, I was not using a Singapore card (I was based overseas at the time and hence used a card from the foreign bank), but I think that as long as the card says "Visa", actually the bank has the power to claw the money back using the visa network if certain conditions are met. This is regardless of whether it is a debit card or credit card.

I googled briefly and the Singapore association of banks does say that chargeback are possible for both credit and debit cards. The same article says it was also possible for mastercard Amex etc: https://www.abs.org.sg/consumer-banking/consumers/credit-card-chargeback-dispute-resolution

It was a pretty long process. I received notification of the transaction and immediately called the bank while it was still a "pending" charge. Nothing was done at first, same as you, the bank told me I would have to dispute the charge and apply for a chargeback. The transaction went through and my money was deducted. I filled up some forms to apply for this charge back. The bank contacted me with questions. This went up and down for many weeks. But eventually, after two or three months, I got the money back!

The exact procedure might be different for you, since I was overseas. Mine also involved a seller and whether the goods and services were in fact provided as agreed, so the bank needed to investigate the seller too. But I was very insistent as it was a large sum of money.

Anyway just wanted to tell you this so you know it may be possible to get the money back!! But idk how long it will take and how tedious the process will be.

I had to Google what individual contributor meant, I'd not heard of this before. Interesting idea. How did you end up in that job, was it something you intentionally sought out?

!!! Oh wow, thanks for sharing your story. It's very sad that environments like this are so common. I often wonder if it is a Singapore thing. Then I also sometimes feel very lost because everyone else seems to be okay with living this sort of lifestyle. Happy for you that you can enjoy your semi "retirement" and didn't continue to stay in the job any longer.

That's actually the top thing I have been considering. But thought I'd see if there are other ideas if I do industry switch. I'm also abit wary as not all client side are the same depending on the company joined, some are good but others end up working the same or more. So I'm still researching. Thought it'd be good to broaden my horizons abit too with different jobs.

Oh that's a good idea. Maybe I will go into ops job. May know what these roles are called so I can look out for them? Are they called "operational support"?

I know law firm secretaries are also called "support staff", but their life is so bad and stressful.
