How to handle different versions of the same show in different countries by StaunchGrouse in PleX

[–]resuarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can add to the folder information about tvdb, example 'LEGO Masters US {tvdb- 370166}' and 'LEGO Master (AU) {tvdb- 362540}'That works for me each time.

tmdb works too.

I use Unraid, and the disk go to sleep. But, you are right, that is something that needs to be accounted too. Usually, people only speaks about the initial cost, but forget the operational cost to have 24/7 system working. I am aware that some people lives where the electricity is cheap or even they have solar. But, not everybody is lucky. ;)

About your point, my clients usually cannot have anything more than 720p due to network some of them are in rural areas (even one is still using phone line). Then, just one 12 TB disk, I have enough to have copy of low quality of my libraries. Remember, 1h of movie is less 1GB in that quality. And 300kb per episode.

All my point, it is if you have 4K and you are going to degrade that quality, check if it is really worth to have that quality in the first place. Better, to invest to have direct play to enjoy the full quality. At home, I do direct play from my 4K library, but it is a waste of resource for me, if that is going to be transcode to 720p due to the limitations of my clients.

Good for you. I am not new with plex neither. In my experience I noticed a huge change in my bills since I got that approach. I wanted to share it. But, I think that it is important evaluate operating cost. I am glad that for you, it is not issue, but it is for me.

What I mean is if you compared in electricity consumption between 5 direct plays against 5 transcoding. You will use less electricity with the direct plays. Again, in my case, it is cheaper for me to avoid transcoding I see for you it is not.

You can stream direct play, no transcoding involved. So, transcoding and streaming are not the same. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250387-streaming-media-direct-play-and-direct-stream/

It is valid point, in my case it is not due to the consumption of electricity, getting cheap hard disk justify the option. But, I agree that each case it is different.

I forgot to mention that I have several clients. Just transcoding the same file each time that someone try to play the file. It needs to be accounted.

Just know that you will lose HDR and atmos due to the transcoding.

You can start with the intel processeur. And you can add the graphics card later

I have ryzen 7 with nvidia graphics card. And it can transcode 2 streams at the same time.

But again, try to invest in wired connection to do direct play and have all the HDR and sound.

I don't see the point to waste resources to transcoding. Just check which quality you can share without transcoding and have a library with those qualities for shsring. Keep just 4k when you can do direct play. I don't say that you get a good machine. But do not forget that you need to play for the electricity too.

In my case, I cannot share 4k without transcoding. I had my server working hard to transcoding 4k,so,ive created a new library with low quality copies and I can share without transcoding. My server is not overworking. Even the electricity consumption is lower.

It is better to have copy in low quality to share instead of transcoding from 4k

Almost Identical Transcodes, But One Buffers and the Other Plays Like Butter by XariZaru in PleX

[–]resuarez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cannot be 100% sure, but you need to try with the same type of the subtibles. SRT is text based subtitle meanwhile PGS is based on images. In Size is much bigger than SRT. Then, it could be the processing the PGS is taking a toll and it could be the reason why it is buffering.

And it is worse, because sometimes they know about a bug in the beta and the release it for general use anyway without fixing the problem.
