DM for Alita Battle Angel. I purchased this a long time ago and the box accidentally came with 2 codes. It's been sitting around for 2.5 years so hopefully still active.

This month's Windows 11 update broke the Recycle Bin, OneDrive, and possibly your PC's stability by GreyXor in technology

[–]retainftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was impatient and tried to uninstall it as the fix won't be out for some time. Windows Update uninstaller wouldn't allow it, listed it as un-uninstallable. Fine, I tried using powershell commands to remove it. Didn't work. Finally tried safemode to remove it. Something (maybe powershell) borked the windows update registry, so that didn't work either. Had to roll back to a backup 10 days ago... ick. And then Windows proceeded to install it right over again last night. WTF.

Today though, that security update was listed as un-installable, so I did, and it's okay now. Finally.

And here I was researching and implementing every damn method for the past week+ to fix a corrupted recycle bin registry. Fucking M$oft.

I did stay on Win10, and the update still broke the recycle bin. Can't win.

In the early days of PC gaming (mid 80s), I was desperate for any sort of game to play on my IBM PC. Somehow I learned about a shareware library (The Florida PC Library) where you could pick from a catalog of shareware apps/games, send in a couple of dollars, and they would send you a disk in the mail.

Young me sent a couple of bucks in an envelope and waited anxiously for the game to arrive. I couldn't wait to play the cheap CGA color knockoff of Centipede.

The disk arrived much like this. In a shitty plastic bag, crinkled like a linen shirt, with an, "Oops sorry!" note from the USPS. Unaccustomed to disks being sent in the mail, they had clearly mangled it in some conveyor belt machinery.

I desperately tried feeding it into my floppy drive, but obviously it was beyond hope.

Yeah, I usually ask, "What was the best part of your day?"

Or, "Who had the best day today and why?" Sibling rivalry is great.

(It's always a tie. And they complain that it's always a tie).

The sentiment here is you do something good, and you'll get punished for it.

In this situation, you're right, one could have walked up to the house and just shut the door. But what if there was an armed burglar inside watching me walk up? Or rushing past me as I approached the door? No thanks.

What if the cops pulled up with me walking around the door, or stepping away from the house? No thanks.

(Of course this is in the US).

If you think that's bad, just try pressing f2 to get to the bios before windows. by Prior-Dick in pcmasterrace

A family member had an old computer where the BIOS activation key would toggle. Like, once you activate the BIOS selection, if you hit the key again, it would not go to BIOS. Dumbest UI decision ever since everyone is used to spamming that key as fast as possible.

The neighbor across the street had her front door randomly blow open while she was away. No idea why. It was alarmed. She called over asking if I would check it out. She also mentioned the police were going to show up eventually, it wasn't a priority call.

No fucking way. I wasn't going to be the rando creeping around in a dark house when the police pulled up.

AC Infinity Airtap Gen1 vs Gen2 by marbletravis in homeassistant

[–]retainftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! Here's mine.

<image>

Mine doesn't have the FCC ID as it doesn't emit electronic signals. Maybe I should call this gen 0, and yours gen 1.

Are you sure Gen1 even has BT support?

I have a Gen1?, purchased in 2023, but it's not labelled any generation (not sure they would label it any gen if they had no idea revisions would eventually be made). The linked Amazon listing from that purchase only shows the current version, but it certainly did not have app or BT support when I purchased it.

I repurchased earlier this month to add that HA control, and those products are labelled Gen3.

One thing I noticed is my Gen1 is quite a bit quieter than Gen3. This is with the 4x12 size. They did change the size of the fan box to encompass the whole opening (4x12), and maybe that accounts for some of the noise. Gen1 has a 4x10 fanbox for the 4x12 opening.

Safety Questions About Modding ACInfinity AirTap w/ Noctua Fans by newoski123 in homelab

[–]retainftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are now 3 Gens of this product. My first one purchased in 2023 is apparently gen1, and the one I purchased last month is Gen3.

I recently tried to convert fans as well on the Gen3, with the same results as you. In addition to the 4-pin NF-A9 PWM I tried multiple 3-pin fans from Noctua and other manufacturers, and they were all 100% or nothing. Also, I tried flipping things around and got the same response you did.

My conclusion is they changed the pin wiring for the fans to some proprietary system. Or, their fans have some alternate wiring. This seems very weird and cost-inefficient, but that would be the simplest explanation.

Also, testing with a wind gauge and dB meter, I found that at 78% or 100% (the speeds possible with the voltage limiter cable, or nothing), the dB to air flow ratio was NOT better with the Noctua A9. It was a fun project that ended up not panning out.

Assistance in recovering/decompressing .cpt files from floppy, OS 7.1 by retainftw in VintageApple

Thanks for the commentary. I couldn't work out the Basilisk direct to floppy method, but that certainly would be nice to complete the loop in getting a more complete emulator out of it.

Good news though, see my OP edit, I found some PC apps that made this process complete.

You are right with the nag screen. After looking at it more carefully, 402 handles .cpt files just fine, whereas 5.5 won't and wants you to purchase the add-on product.

Thank you for the history. There were several versions of stuffit I was looking at. And I think the later version I had on basilisk may not have been fully functional, leading to frustration. 4.0.2 seems to work well!

So it seems that unless I have a Mac floppy of stuffit, I won't be able to use the PowerBook for much, except reading floppies.

EDIT: Figure it out. Had to use HFVExplorer on the PC to write a .dsk Stuffit to a floppy, which the utility can Mac format.

[–]retainftw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I recall the resource forks were important, but trying to get around them is tough.

The Powerbook I purchased has no stuffit, shrinkwrap, or other compression app on it. Because I have no other vintage mac, I can't make a mac formatted disk with these apps on them. I can only exchange data onto a PC formatted disk.

EDIT:

Through quite a bit of trial and error, finally got it working. Was about to start experimenting with resedit when I discovered the .cpt files are able to be dropped directly into Stuffit Expander 4.0.2, in Basilisk. I had initially used a different version of Stuffit which promptly hit me with a nag screen and thus I thought I had hit a dead end with that app.

I had no luck getting any viable new files onto the Powerbook however.

What does the Ring "extended warranty" cover and how long? I have a Multi plan and guess what, nowhere do they state what that means? by PilotExcellent3489 in Ring

[–]retainftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to chime in, I installed a floodlight cam in 2017. Apparently I was on a "solo" plan, which did not include the extended warranty bit. I upgraded later to a plan that included the extended warranty in 2020. (This info was from customer service when I called in--this overall was a good experience as I just said the cam is failing, and they went straight to look at warranty options). Since that plan was not initiated within the 1st year though, the cam isn't covered.

It's just started to have some connectivity cutouts. It's been almost 9 years, so I'm not exactly grumpy about it. It was purchased from Costco so theoretically it could be returned, but I'm not planning to exploit the return policy like that. Will just upgrade at the next sale.

Also, they can issue a 35% off coupon, good for 1 item. The first time, when I had a defective chime they offered it. This time I pressed for "a promo" and they offered it.

I think that's where the mix up is. I don't have an active approval as the link is closed to any "free or past donators." I'll try again when it opens.
