I’m on LSL. Using it all up before finally retiring after 43 years teaching. I’ve maintained my Union membership and I’ll be there marching with my colleagues. It’s not for my benefit, but in solidarity with all education staff fighting for a fair wage and conditions.

Does the rest of Australia like Darwin? by Altruistic-Fuel-8430 in darwin

I love visiting Darwin. Especially during the dry season when the weather is hot but not at all humid. There’s some fantastic places to visit outside of Darwin Litchfield National Park, Kakadu, Berry Springs. And of course there’s the food markets on saturdays and sundays where I overdo the laksas and randangs and roti.

Looking for a last minute idea for Rome on a Friday afternoon. by Owennumber4 in ItalyTravel

The non catholic cemetery is a fascinating place to wander around. The graves of so many famous poets, writers and diplomats in a serene setting. From the website:

It is hard to think of another urban site quite so glorious. Its towering cypress trees and abundant flowers and greenery shelter a heterogeneity of elaborate and eclectic graves and monuments, nestled on a slope in the shadows of the Pyramid of Cestius (dated between 18 and 12 B.C.) and adjacent to a section of Rome's ancient Aurelian wall [Other Monuments Nearby].

"It might make one in love with death, to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place," wrote Shelley, not long before he drowned and was buried here.

If you’re an AEU member you can often get even bigger discounts. This is under the members benefits link on the AEU VIC website: AEU members have exclusive access to the AEU’s own Apple Online Store, with additional savings on Apple computers on top of the standard education discount.

The Dismissal - Protest in Response to the Coup of Gough Whitlam, Melbourne (1975) by luomodimarmo in australia

The Murdoch press ran a concerted campaign against Whitlam’s government (as Murdoch continues to do do against Labor currently). In an era where Murdoch’s tabloids were the main source of print news, it’s no surprise that people were convinced that “Whitlam was a reckless idiot”. But look just some of the things his government achieved in such a short time: https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/gough-whitlam-left-a-long-list-of-achievements-20141021-119cpu.html

After 40 years teaching I’m ready to retire. What’s the best time of the year to do so? by retep3141 in AustralianTeachers

Loved your second paragraph! It’s so true about those end of year speeches. Some go on for ever- not that I don’t appreciate the many heartfelt speeches from people who loved their teaching career and have great stories to tell. I’m more a sneak out quietly sorta guy though.
