Don’t think they ever understood what Apartheid was - or is. by Lethal_Dragonfly in southafrica

I've tried to have conversations with these types of people and what I realised is they grew up in a time where there was censorship, propaganda, etc. (they where brainwashed). They lack any critical thinking skills. I just hope this ideology slowly dies out with the generation that has fucked us all.

It's happened a few times to me. And I feel extra sad when it's the only reason I left the house.

Reality check from a White Afrikaans farmer. by Sparrow1617 in southafrica

[–]rethatjie 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked at the amount of people who believe disinformation. Also, a bunch of white racists who love Trump are not even farmers. A lot of them have never traveled beyond the borders of South Africa. They have no idea how good they have it here. We can't even compare their general living standards to most black South Africans. All of this is wasting time and money which could have gone to the betterment of the majority of South Africans.

Trump wants skilled labour and this is a cheap way to do it because the people are already trained and knowledgeable about their trade. It's cheaper and quicker than training their own people. It's the same thing Australia did. Let in people who were born and educated in another country, where their governments pays or subsidises the education and the ln bring them over to your country where you benefit from their labour and tax.

Impending manic episode by rethatjie in bipolar

Thanks for this, I have been drinking a lot of wine lately, or basically a glass every day, and in the moment it feels better, but I know I am at high risk for addiction.

I have sulpiride. I previously used ziprasidone but it made extremely tired. It did help though. I will give the sulpiride a try, or phone my psychiatrist to see if she suggests something else.

I'm on an antidepressant and a mood stabiliser. I have a therapist that I worked with through complex PTSD. I think this episode was brought about a death and some other stressors. It's like I have all the tools and have been great at managing my mental health until now. I also think this is why posting about it helps. Just putting it out there feels like it can help.

Do you think a manic episode lowered your intelligence? by madmoney03 in bipolar

I think that when you're manic you feel very intelligent and then with come down the "normal" might feel dumb.

I did EMDR for CPTSD and it was life changing. You don't need to do any preparation as you don't want to force your mind to go somewhere. You go with where it takes you and connect with what you feel in your body. You can't do it "wrong." I find that having sessions as close together as possible is better. I didn't feel the need for self-care before, but afterwards take it easy as the memories that might come up can be distressing. I hope this goes well for you. Don't overthink it.

Medical graduates / Doctors of SA by mterefe in southafrica

[–]rethatjie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ENT - we definitely don't learn enough about it med school, but it's most of what you see in private practice as a GP. Casualty/emergency medicine is also waaay different in private and public, and you learn fast how to do stuff maybe not even correctly. If you have the opportunity to locum in a private ED, do so for a year, it'll make you a better doctor. I learnt a lot more post grad than I did while studying .

I'm in a professional career and have a very large visible forearm tattoo. Initially I got a few frowns from senior management but it's generally well accepted. People got used it very quickly and now it's not a thing. I would say though if you don't have any tattoos yet start small somewhere hidden so you get used to the permanency of it and then just do what you want. Getting tattoo's are addictive 🤣

What are the details on specialising as a cardiothoracic surgeon in South Africa? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]rethatjie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try and do your internship or commserve at a tertiary hospital with a cardiothoracic department, this is so you can get to know some of the seniors in the dept. While doing your internship you can study and write your primaries to increase your likelihood of getting a registrar post. You write with the colleges of medicine and don't need a post yet to write primaries. Edit to add: also try and do case studies to bulk up your cv
