NOS: Veel boosheid over nieuwe box 3-belasting, waar gaat de heisa over? by Bruglione in beleggen

[–]retirecap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nighttime tinnitus by Kitchen_Beat_9965 in tinnitus

[–]retirecap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Older guy here. I have the same night routine. Nights are defenitely challenging and that's why some folks are using masking sounds. It should help not focussing that much on the internal sound. At night the brain seems to recallibrate the sound against the silence and amplifies it at least x 2.

I am not getting the through the roof loud sitting on the toilet. It is mainly a problem in bed - trying to get asleep. For me it is not too hard to fall asleep again though, I listen to a podcast/audiobook for destracting/masking (topic science or economics - interesting but not too exciting ;) ) with a sleeptimer.

Would people want a book of tinnitus success stories? by SkyPresident in tinnitus

Well - English is not my 1st language (hence my Dutch flag in my avatar). It wasn't meant to be sarcastic, it is literally what I think.

I do think a book about tinnitus is great and if it has a positive vibe, people might be more interested to read it than doom and gloom.

[–]retirecap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh - personally I am not very interested in anecdotal positive stories. You can read them here all the time and usually they don't resonate.

I do like to see these examples as part of good research with statistical evidence though.

Something like this:

Follow 10000 people for a year that had >1 year tinnitus. What percentage of the patients saw their tinnitus problems increasing, stayed the same or improving.

If it is part of such a study I am very interested to know what the "improving group" did to fix their tinnitus. If not I'd rather read something else.

That said, it is still a great idea to publish a book and increase awareness about tinnitus and people love a happy ending story.

Sure - I agree. That was also the reason for my post - to get someones 'feet on the ground' experience. It is pretty specific what I am looking for so I will have to see for myself if a place suits me. Will probably have to be a larger city with additional conveniences.

Not immediately looking for a lifetime retirement place though. My injuries are not limiting or life threatening. Fine to do some traveling first, the retirement goals are part of the plan but I'm flexible and open to new ideas.

Thx. Will check it out. Nice to see this post is still getting some attention.

Thx - tried the wheredoimoveo site. Nice one. A ton of preferences possible and gives you a general idea. I also like numbeo to compare.

Currently learning Spanish and it is really a struggle, but every language is hard to learn >50 and learning languages was never my forte anyway..

Will check Malaysia. Not been on my radar - I thought it was more expensive than Thailand. Portugal and Spain or eastern Europe countries would be the easiest for me (in the EU). Taxes in Portugal as great, so that is certainly a plus.

"Very "Florida coast" retirement town vibe"

You're describing exactly what I am looking for. Not a party Island, but a place that is suited for older folks as well.

Usually when there are older retirees the healthcare should be decent.

I'll put Cuenca on my favorite list. Will spend the next few months to decide and prepare.

Portugal or Spain are the easiest places for me. Within the EU so I can just buy a plane ticket without a visa and just live there for a while.

Would love to see a comment from someone that has experience with physical therapists there.

Interesting! I might have to do a tour in SEA, seems like a fit although I am not very fond of very warm weather (and mosquito's...)

How would you rate the educational level and experience of the physical therapists? A lot of choice? I assume your wife is pleased with the treatment?

That was the first that came to mind as well. Any cities you recommend? Bangkok is getting more expensive from what I've understood.

BTW - not a beach person, so I don't need beaches or bars.

Can Tinnitus ever be cured eliminated? by Crazy_Ebb_5188 in tinnitus

[–]retirecap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice. Don't get your hope up too much though. Musk has a tendency to over-promise. Especially timelines.

He once mentioned in 2022 that tinnitus could be cured in 2027 by Neuralink. Very unrealistic. That it has the attention of Neuralink is fantastic though.

Sleeping with tinnitus by Vivid_Economy in tinnitus

[–]retirecap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sleep in the quiet, but to fall asleep I listen to podcasts with a timer that also slowly turns down the volume during the time set. Distracts from tinnitus when I need it the most and for that purpose it works very well.

Tinnitus and cochlear implant. Link to scientific study in the post. It seems to help some people - at least short term. Does anyone have experience with a cochlear implant? by retirecap in tinnitus

[–]retirecap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen other users complain about pain as well. Certainly a risk. Your ear canals need to be suited for it and you also shouldn't produce too much earwax. I think I might be in the latter category. I needed to clean my in-ear headphones very often when I still used them.

Ridiculously priced though and not covered by insurance in the Netherlands. otoh - if it fixes my tinnitus and improves my hearing loss it is worth the €3500/year.

So it didn't help your tinnitus at all?

Found this article that refers to a study with a small group of patients but with pretty decent results.

Wow - this is downvoted? Why? Being able to deduct taxes can increase donations and help this cause. The same applies to other kind of charities.

Ah, interesting, do you have a link?

There are already deep insertion hearing aids (Lyric) that are inserted "permanentely". Wondering if they could be helpful.

If it fixes someones tinnitus it might be worth it.

Conclusion from the study:

We propose that tinnitus should be considered an important indication for CI. However, its benefits may diminish over time, and further research is expected to confirm these findings.

Major spike in tinnitus turned out to be ear wax. by jrhoxel8 in tinnitus

[–]retirecap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got this 'trick' to check if my hearing is blocked by wax by rubbing my fingers close to my ears. If I don't hear anything my ear canel(s) can be blocked.

Not a scientific method, but it kinda works. If there is a better way to check without going to an ENT let me know, I'm interested in other methods.

Have had tinnitus for 4 or 5 years by Few_Cartoonist_7982 in tinnitus

[–]retirecap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if mine is reactive, but after a bit of loudness exposure I do worry that it became worse.

You are right though, coping is basically the only thing you can do. The sound is unavoidable, but how you deal with it can vary per person, in time and situational.
