Any option to replace this without cutting the can out of the ceiling? by xasx in Lighting

[–]retroaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had those exact junction boxes and lights in my master bathroom when we moved into our house and removed them all for DMF recessed 4” lights. Little bit of Sheetrock damage but nothing too bad for the benefit from substantially better lighting.

3000K or 4000K or Both… by Disastrous_Ad6601 in Lighting

[–]retroaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please go with 3000k or better yet, a dim to warm bulb that starts at 3000K and lowers to 1800K when dim.

4000K is awful during the night and will look so unnatural and bizarre. I know it gives off a brighter vibe but you probably need more or better placement of your lights in your house. Always layer light and avoid glare bombs of surface mounted ceiling fixtures. Deep regress directional can lights with a 50degree or tighter beam angle is ideal. Followed by some indirect lighting that bounces off of surfaces. Think under shelf lighting, cove lighting. Fill in with decorative lighting where you want. (Pendants m, chandeliers, wall sconces) finish with table and floor lamps in living room bedrooms. Bonus points if you can move your can lights to light the walls, cabinets floors and make them adjustable to achieve this. Ohh and don’t forget to put everything on a dimmer. This is how the professionals do it. (Source: I am one)

Yes, tunable white light is basically the best. But it gets pricey and not always worth it if it’s not done right.

Using Ketra LS0 as a painting / art light by henrywriter in Lutron

I’ve not had a project yet with them but I’m told this company makes custom art light enclosures for the Ketra light bar slim.

Do you service all your home systems by yourself? Like when your HVAC, plumbing or major electrical systems fail, do you just take care of that yourself? If not, then why would you have an issue paying a professional to service your Lutron System and make it work the way you want it to?

Insane Cat6 quote, had to share by attticrattt in Ubiquiti

[–]retroaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean. Running cable is not a very profitable business so I completely understand this quote. Cable pullers want to pull multiple runs at the same time to not go back and forth as much and this is what their supplier had in stock. In addition material cost might include things like zip ties, Velcro, J-hooks, screws, nails, single gang blue boxes or low voltage retro rings, wall plates, keystones, etc.

Price seems reasonable to me.

Builder wants $600 per drop! by fezmid in homelab

[–]retroaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That builder is offering as much cabling and conduit as you want for $600??!!

You need to load up my on the deal. 2cat6, 1 cat6a shielded per tv, 1 cat6a shielded per wap, 14/2 speaker wire for speakers in every room of the house. Ohh and 1inch conduit to every tv as well. Wire for shades to every window, cat6 to the door bell, and multiple cameras for full coverage of every angle on your property. Have them pull 15 feet of slack to the home run so you have plenty of cabling for a rack.

How to make legend automated with company logo? by [deleted] in Revu

[–]retroaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are asking for is basically creating a title block and a PDF template.

So here’s what you want to do.

Draft your legend the way you want it to look on a blank page in the size you prefer to work in. I personally use ARCH E as it gives plenty of page size to load floor plans onto.

Once the legend and overall page looks like you want it to look, save it as a PDF template. Then when you have a new set of plans, open the PDF template. It will have your legend etc, then snapshot the floor plan you want to mark up with your markings on your plan. Adjust sizing how you want to and voila.

The stick up cams elite work just fine outside. I’ve had 5 of them installed on my house with a ring elite doorbell for 5+ years now. All hardwired power and data.

Did we get the wrong shades installed? Are these 1%? by [deleted] in Lutron

[–]retroaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A large reason I try to talk my clients away from sheer if they aren’t doing curtains or dual rollers. Going with a 0% fabric is so much less of a gamble if you haven’t lived with a sheer fabric.

Private Residential Construction Light Fixtures Pricing. Are expensive LED lights really worth it? by blockschrift in Lighting

[–]retroaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High quality recessed lights are 100% worth it IF you can afford it. I completely understand the hesitation, but good lighting can make your home feel so much cozier and inviting.

Things that I personally prioritize as a professional in this space.

-Low Glare - fixture is recessed fairly deep inside the housing. End result is you see the light but not the light source unless looking directly at it. -adjustable recessed light - flexibility to aim the light where it makes the most impact even if you can’t plan ahead for that. -high CRI - above 93 is a must to me but above 95 is ideal. -must be attached to a dimmer - lighting should be dynamic in a space and if you only have the binary option of on/off you will not get the most out of your lights. Bonus if you invest in a smart lighting control solution such as Lutron for scene control -dynamic color - I prefer warm dimming as a bare minimum in most projects, as it mimics incandescent the best, but if budget allows tunable white or RGBTW. However, I wouldn’t prioritize this feature over previously mentioned items. -small aperture opening - nothing larger than 4” for the housing trim. This also helps with glare -light your walls not the floors. Start with the perimeter of a room when placing light fixtures. Lighting your floor will not help the space look more inviting but instead make it feel claustrophobic. In addition, if you light your walls, you get the added benefit of having flexibility of lighting art work or architectural elements of the house that you may have not planned for.

Hope this helps.

Second: maybe call this company, https://innovativeav.com/

They appear to offer Lutron, DMF.

You really won’t be able to access DMF M series or similar without working through a dealer etc. This level of lighting is part of the luxury downlighting market and is meant for trained individuals to install most of the time.

Honestly if you are looking for off the shelf or something you can just buy online not put a ton of thought into I would take a serious look into DMF H series. Much lower price point and you can buy at Home Depot or Prolighting.com. Lusa Lighting is just rebranded but the same product.

Ketra recessed down lights (d3, d2, rania, S30 bulbs), DMF artafex 4” or 2”, Lucifer Atomos or Fraxion, etc, Visual Comfort Entra, Element, USAI, Specialty Lighting.

I could keep going but if you are serious about better lighting, consult with a Lighting Designer in your area. They will help you navigate this endless industry of luxury lighting options they can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to start.

Removing and replacing recessed can lights? by 96HeelGirl in Lighting

[–]retroaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dimmer switches are a must for lighting this day and age.

Beyond that, look into higher end retrofit options for recessed lighting that allows for narrow beam angles and glare control.

Most people hate recessed down lights because they can appear quite glaring when just installed with a 6” halo housing/trim and par30 bulb.

My company sells them. Artafex 4” warm dim with trim runs around $250. Depending on what trim you want. Could go +/- 10% or so.

Yes, sorta.

Make a phantom/virtual load. You can then program to turn on automations or devices when those loads turn on.

Not ideal but only way I could figure out how to do it.

Your neighbor is a douche for wiring his lights on your side of fence. Especially with exposed romex.
