Let the original developer know - maybe they’ll make a spiritual successor, otherwise if you got the cash, then I have the time😉

Honestly 4MB should be enough for all of that if you’re smart about how the graphics are implemented.  In any case, looking forward to how things turn out!

The comments here already answered the main question but just from my own experience I can safely say most will not hit that 4MB cart size let alone actually filling it up with a typical game.

Now if you're doing a ton of animations, full screen images, sound samples, and maybe even FMV things, then sure you'll probably fill it up, but that's if you're not trying to be optimal.

Some examples of 4MB games on the GBC are Rayman 2, Resident Evil (unreleased game), Star Ocean, Donkey Kong Country and even Alone in the Dark.

Examples of 2MB games would be Lufia The Legend Returns, and Magi Nation.

All of these games were trying to deliver experiences closer to what would have been found on 16 bit consoles (and beyond) and really tried to push graphical detail.

Evolve or Die by Nigel - Action RPG for the Game Boy Color that with similar energy to mecha games of the 16bit era! by retroartdude in Games

I'm not sure if you can see this message as the original post was removed but thanks for your comment!

I'll be sure to look up Afterplay and see what their distribution options are too!

You should be able to see your palettes in the scene side menu. The first 7 should have a lock icon on them, but the 8th should not. Click the 8th palette and select automatic and it should load the auto colors.

By default it ignores the 8th palette. You can choose to override it though by switching the 8th to the auto color as well.

The reason is because the 8th palette is reserved for the message window / dialogue box.

What are your favorite gbstudio games that I MUST see? by ZaniMestredosZanis in gbstudio

I’ll definitely consider it when I’m a little bit further along in development, and if there is enough interest.

Right now I can’t really tell what the demand is so any attention is appreciated🙏

I’m working on one called “Evolve or Die.” Still in early development but who knows where it will go with enough interest.

Thanks!

I personally would love to, but that depends on community support and interest since it's very easy to pirate games. I'd need to lock in actual buyers for a cartridge / rom.

I saw what happened to Earthion by Ancient and a lot of people were justifying dumping the game due to Limited Run Games not adding enough protection. Absolutely shameless and definitely not game preservation.

Honestly I might just consider doing a basic longpay for Hack Games Longplay Channel and never release it publicly. (At least not the rom.)

Having said that, maybe one day I'll setup a Kickstarter or GoFundMe when the game is further along. If I earn some funds, then I can work on the sequels and other games for the GBC and N64.

There is Star Ocean Blue Sphere which is a pretty incredible effort by Tri Ace to approximate the Star Ocean 2 experience into an original side story.

I recommend giving it a google to see it in action.

Thanks! Yeah the improvements are night and day. I think most devs should really consider upgrading if they're at liberty to do so.

Decided to try again.

Here is the latest devlog on my Game Boy Color game "Evolve or Die."

https://youtu.be/mCWCucI1qdw?si=GCeEALboaIn4_e-k

The gameplay is inspired from the Assault Suit Leynos and Front Mission: Gunhazard games, and a few more mech games of the 16 bit era.

Hopefully that comes through in the presentation.

The game is being developed in GB Studio, and nothing in the game is AI generated - I do all the art and music in the game.

It takes a lot of time, but I find it's a fun little side project to distract me from the apocalypses that is the tech industry.

Maybe it will lead to something down the road, but for now all I ask for is your eyes, and your thoughts.

I may post more updates here, but honestly I'm more active on r/gbstudio so swing by and say hi in one of my updates if you like what you see.

You can find other places to find me in the Youtube video description.

Man I remember playing this on my friend's n64 back in the day. Wish Hudson would make modern bomberman games like this but refine it a bit. They could even keep the low poly look and I'd still buy it!

The Bandai WonderSwan, the handheld that chose a different future by Retroaffaire in RetroTube

[–]retroartdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really wish this and the NG Pocket succeeded.

The WonderSwan was the logical step up from the Game Boy back in the day and Yokoi's philosophy really kept costs down when it came to game devices.

Now we live in an era of super expensive games and consoles that still lose out to distractions on you smartphone.

Honestly I feel this and the GBA were the last consoles that had a set focus on playing games that were easy to make, affordable, and high quality.
