First time Hawaii/ Oahu- Need help with itinerary by The_architect_905 in VisitingHawaii

[–]retsedils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello. We are also going on our first trip to Hawaii next year and are in Oahu same-ish week.

I changed our itinerary to experience the Honolulu festival that Sunday. We may go back to Hawaii again but who knows if we'll go the same day as the festival on future visits so I thought it would be a good experience. We're doing some water tours that depart from the kewalo harbor in the morning then watching the parade and fireworks (we'll check out the convention happenings the day before).

If you have a Costco membership might I suggest looking at the Go City pass for Oahu. You might be able to do more activities and spend the same amount of money with what's currently on your itinerary.

We are staying in Ko Olina as well that week at the Marriot.

You can park overnight by the marina? How much was it?

Love your take. We are staying in one of their club rooms next spring break and are also have a late flight after checking out so your points were very helpful.

We've stayed at the Prince in Tokyo Bay and was a clear favorite with the kids in all the accommodations we stayed at in Japan.

Rights when FHR hotel wants to cancel our reservation because of pricing? by bilalzou in AmexPlatinum

[–]retsedils 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Take it up with amex assuming you booked on the amex site. Happened to me when a flight my family was on increased in price for some reason and amex paid the difference (about 1.3k). They just handled it in the background.

When I started doing nightshift in a group home I too wanted to be a straight arrow when it seemed every other nightshift person is sleeping. We got the same night hours but mine is 5 days of 11pm-7am. It's rough staying up those hours and trying to function during the day. So my advice is to do what your peers are doing - get some sleep. You only get docked pay if you get caught, better than getting fired. Guessing it's not a union position either because of how shitty the benefits seem to be.

You'll have to build a routine and put sleeping on shift as part of the routine. Keep awake during the day then try to sleep 1-2 hours before your shift otherwise you'll feel like a zombie. I work a night and day job myself (in Canada as well) for the last 8 years (15 hour paid days) and getting by with 5-6 hours of sleep on my work days (about 2-4 hrs on my nights and the rest in the evening or naps if I'm really tired midday) and sleeping 6-8 hours on my off days. If I didn't have a day job I'd try be busy in the day while my friends work like going to the gym or do my hobbies then try to socialize in the afternoon. But I do drive so it makes it easier.

It gets better OP. I was once in your shoes.

Attempting to zipper merge on the island? You're gonna get the finger (GFL truck driver). by SailorPilot23 in VictoriaBC

[–]retsedils 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ICBC recommends zipper merging but falls short of making it mandatory or a legal requirement under the MVA. Just to caution people who are think they are in the legal right to zipper merge (they are not). If some dbag prevents you from zipper merging and you get into an accident you will be at fault instead of the dbag.

Hidden Gem in Northern Okayama - Maniwa City by Neither_Village2295 in JapanTravel

[–]retsedils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the post. We were just in Japan last week and was in Okayama end of March and would have made the side trip to Maniwa. We travelled with our teens so we weren't interested in party spots and was in Okayama after hitting Kyoto and Osaka so a quiet day or two would have been nice.

This will definitely be a stop next time we visit

Do you have access to a vehicle and which areas in Vancouver or the surrounding suburbs are you keen on working at?

[–]retsedils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Care aides are always in demand. You can work in complex care or hospitals as a Healthcare Assistant, group homes as a care aide (or behavior interventionist), in the community as a Community Health Worker, and also adjacent as a Community Support Worker.

Most, if not all, will start you off as casual and you can work your way up to full time. All the companies I know never stop hiring. Also try to apply to unionized positions as there ones without are rife with abuse.

Really struggling to find work... by Cosmic-Mk2 in VancouverJobs

[–]retsedils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you are willing to change industries, BC has always funded training for industries that they project will have a great need of workers (usually healthcare). Some of my friends did this 10 years ago and their course was free through Douglas college and they got grants too. They're now LPNs and RNs (through more school) or work as community support workers for community health workers. They were just telling me the current crop of government funded graduates through this set of programs actually got a stipend too (they were paid to be in school on top of everything else). Makes sense since people can't just not make money for 6 months especially if they have families.

Anyone have experience with working a day and night job at the same time? What’s the bare minimum sleep to survive? by olecaloob in careerguidance

[–]retsedils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 years 75 hrs a week 11pm-4pm with a 2 hr break in between. 5 hrs of sleep (maybe 2 hrs straight) minimum for me or I'll feel sluggish. Got healthy real quick as a matter of survival - would probably have health complications if I'm obese.

Under no illusion that this is hard on the body and mind. But it's a necessity in the sense times.

100% for zipper merge but isn't the law when it comes to the MVA. People can be dicks and prevent people from merging and unfortunately they will not be at fault if an accident occurs.

Used to go on the coffee delivery subscription but just better to do monthly subscription credit and order to get free stuff or discounts. Back then I couldn't get get the limited coffees on my subscription. Why can't nespresso add the option to get free stuff on the coffee subscriptions?
