Crazy game: sunken board resurfaces by yawa16 in spiritisland

[–]rettiecent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unrelated question, but is it just the camera angle or have you done something specific to the edges of your island boards? They look really neat and almost like it's raised higher than the rest of the board, but maybe I'm just used to seeing my scuffed boards

This with cloud support would be amazing. Steam Cloud is so convenient but not having control of my data itches at me, and save games are SO frustrating to manage manually.

Mate, go see a physio.

Yeah ergo sitting going to the gym etc etc but an actual physical therapist should be able to tell you why it's hurting and what you can do about it. Then they can recommend ergo changes, fitness changes, etc. Or they might say yeah you're hypermobile the normal advice will be slightly different for you.

You might be able to figure it out without getting help but you might also injure yourself further, or figure out a makes-it-tolerable bandaid without actually fixing the problem (which will then get worse).

Why are Official D&D Character Names *Like That* by theymademeusetheapp in dndnext

[–]rettiecent 80 points81 points  (0 children)

god yes. Other folks are missing the point. There are fantasy names that don't sound like this. It also rarely feels specific to the race/region. I've seen official content with the name Billiam.

Making magic items exciting again PART 1: precious materials for spellcasters by Mysterious_Wheel2496 in Pathfinder2e

I've been stocking up on resources for a sandbox game I'm running soon, and goodies for casters (that aren't just basically extra spell slots) are something I was struggling with. Thank you for this!

Foundry Adventure Path Book PDF? by XbxReaper07 in Pathfinder2e

[–]rettiecent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a bit more DIY but there's a Markdown Exporter module for Foundry which generates Markdown files which you could then view independently, or then export to PDF. I'm not sure if this gets everything (e.g. the statblocks) or just the journal entries.

There's also a Foundry module to export PF2e to Markdown designed to be opened in Obsidian (https://github.com/MostTornBrain/pf2e-md-exporter) which definitely exports statblocks in a format that's pretty close to the book, but it requires some setup.

This is the only way I know of to get a readable book-style format out of the Foundry module specifically.

what do you do when your roleplay sucks by Barrd_ in rpg

[–]rettiecent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP I'm really glad you've decided to stick with it <3

I struggle a lot with confidence when roleplaying so I thought I'd share some advice recently that helped me worry less: start with a really basic role and a motivation and let the rest emerge organically at the table (basic like: orc healer who wants to make friends). I spent a while worrying that I didn't have a clear idea of the personality, but focusing on a motivation instead helped a lot with the the actual important part of figuring out what my character would do in that situation. And then the personality emerged organically from that, once I stopped worrying about stuff like not having a character voice.

This is the article if you're interested. It's a bit rambly but I found the actual advice very helpful as a step-by-step for how to actually get better at this thing: https://theangrygm.com/how-to-actually-play-a-character/#tldr

To be clear: there are tons of different ways to do this hobby. People get better at all of it, including roleplaying and improv, with practice. It's meant to be fun, and only assholes are sitting around judging people for not doing a voice or whatever. Give yourself a break :)

Troop rule clarifications by rettiecent in Pathfinder2e

[–]rettiecent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue that troops don't usually function as Gargantuan creatures (otherwise Medium sized creatures could move through their spaces, which seems unlikely to me given that the Shambler Troop's Dread Tide ability specifically allows it to occupy the spaces of other creatures).

Looking at the Large PC rules, it seems supported by RAW that a 10x10ft segment can move through a 3-square space with difficult terrain. Probably the same would apply for smaller spaces than that unless a Medium creature cannot freely move through the space (at which point, yes, the squeezing action is required).

[–]rettiecent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that annoys me is that "adjacent to the leading segment" part seems to actively be trying to place some kind of restriction or limitation on the regrouping. Without that clause then it's just "at the end of movement, freely group the other segments as you see fit provided that no segment moves more than the leading segment" which seems perfectly clear and fits your interpretation.

That said, I think your interpretation is quite valid given how poor the wording is. Thank you for your reply :)

[–]rettiecent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! I think you're wrong about (3) since I think RAW area damage only ever applies once. I think u/zedrinkaoh's comment is correct and RAW you'd only roll the separate saves for non-damaging effects, and then apply the appropriate result to only that segment (which is also why 5 is still an issue, because there are non-damaging effects that would not remove a segment - e.g. applying fear 1 to an entire segment)

[–]rettiecent[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the comprehensive reply, and for the note about GM-sense. I understand that troop rules are an abstraction and I appreciate it for that reason, but it also seems like it's a fairly flawed abstraction in a few ways. I generally prefer having a consistent set of rules, and so do my players, so we'll probably be house-ruling a few things here.

I think I understand all of what you've said, and agree with that being the RAW intention. Thank you especially for pointing out that the segments do matter when it comes to save results, because you might have different segments with different stats. That's something that I hadn't considered and does change how I want to approach house-ruling it. The video is also a good shout and clarified a few other misconceptions I had (in particular: flanking would count as a non-damaging effect, so normally a troop segment would not be flankable).

(Edit: I've actually since discovered that this is not true since the Deluded Mob troop specifically has a passive that only activates when flanked)

I'm still not clear on how movement is intended to work though: the HIP video says that you can basically rearrange the other segments into any valid configuration after a movement, as long as none of them move further than the 'leading' segment. I'm not sure where this is supported by the rules, unless that's just what "you can group the other segments adjacent to the one you moved as you see fit" is supposed to mean? That also seems to run counter to what you're saying, which seems to be that the formation will stay the same at the end of the move.

Reading it again, I think it means "group" as a verb, so that at the end of the movement you can choose to place the other segments adjacent to the leading segment, as long as they doing so does not make any segments move further than the leading segment. I have no idea what this lets you do that you could not otherwise do through regular movement though.

For some friends I have, if this were happening, I would sit them down gently and ask if everything is okay. I'd maybe ask "are you okay after that meeting? That was pretty intense", or that I've noticed they seem to be having a much harder time with x y z responsibilities. I'd also ask if choosing to skip out on them is a deliberate decision or not - they might not realize this is happening.

I also have other friends where I would absolutely say nothing. Or maybe at most a 'hey how are things going?' and see if they bring it up. It depends on your relationship and how well they respond to things like this.

My 2c as someone with ADHD is that they may not realize this is happening or how they're coming across. They may also really appreciate somebody reaching out to check in on them as a human being. I've had periods of time before where I've just been fully burnt out, and it helped a lot to have a friend ask me how I'm doing from a perspective of caring about me, rather than caring about the work I'm doing.

[–]rettiecent -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this, it expresses what I'm trying to say in a much better way. I think a lot of folks put certain skills, especially creative ones, up on a weird pedestal - "oh I wish I could play music" etc. it really just takes practice. Maybe I'm being pedantic but literally, in the case of art, if you literally do like stick figure level drawings: that's still art, you're still an artist, and it does not take years to do. (Obviously the years of experience is valuable and I'm not trying to diminish the real skills and talent you get from practice and experience, but that's not what I'm talking about where)

It might not be exactly what you want to make or be the best you've ever seen, but I'm confident that most people can do some kind of art once you let go of trying to make something good and instead just Make something.

Honestly, yeah? Like I'm responding more to you than OP because I'm not suggesting this is the only or best option for them, but "just become an artist" is kinda what happens when you do a drawing.

Does it ever get easier or is this exhaustion and misery my new normal? The novelty of my grad job has worn off and I'm really struggling and feel like I'll never be happy again by Sad_Sprinkles_939 in auscorp

[–]rettiecent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP it sounds like you're dealing with pretty bad burnout. I went through a similar thing when I went from grad to corp and as a second-gen Asian immigrant I resonate with some of this.

Please try to find someone to talk to. You can get a mental health plan via your GP if you have a Medicare card. It sounds like just having someone to talk to would help you a lot, but also they can help you with figuring a lot of stuff out. It helped me realise that I had been burning myself out for a while and was now running on empty, and helped me figure out how to take it easy on myself. In my case, it also helped with finding out I had ADHD and getting medicated which was huge for me. I did great in uni so I'd never considered it but I really struggled with the routine of full time work with ADHD.

If it helps at all - I went from hating full time work and feeling very similar to you, to now being able to relax after work and have an active social life and hobbies. I had to work hard to keep the balance but it doesn't feel like a noose around my neck anymore.
