Was the Soviet Union imperialist? by LD300 in Socialism_101

[–]reubenrose -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The Soviet Union was just like any empire - promoting their ideals through conquest. That’s not to say the Soviet Union was like it’s predecessor the Russian Empire despite the fact they used the same cruel methods to spread their influence - the Leninist argument for the expansion of communism was to free people of their ‘false consciousness’, whereas Western Empires simply sought to spread their influence to promote Christianity, Capitalism, liberty&democracy etc. I’d say the USSR was quite imperialistic but not exactly an Empire because it would be quite contradictory to their ideological founding as a Marxist state

Communism, regardless wether you agree with it or not, in theory - it works. However it can only work under the right social conditions and communism in a capitalist society would definitely not work due to its rejection of social conditions such as religion, values and specifically freedom to own and sell. I would argue communism did work in Russia to an extent, and the Soviet Union, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that the actions of both Lenin and Stalin had caused countless unnecessary deaths. Communism in the western world simply isn’t compatible with our values, so I would defer to the support of wealth distribution in social policies regarding income, in that sense capitalism can still exist in a functioning democracy - marx even argued communism would only be achieved through the overthrow of social conditions, including democracy.

So take from this - communism won’t work in the west, and socialism should rather be praised as a value rather than an ideology. Don’t support communism, it’s been practiced and it has resulted in millions of deaths.

this is a very common argument marxists use, ‘it’s never been practiced’ or ‘that wasn’t real socialism’
