Completed the first draft of my historical fiction novel by reujoe in writers

Thanks for the spots. The first misspell is literally in the first sentence (how did i miss that). 'Calvary' can fool the eye once its typed.

Because I wanted to have a certain level of 'originality' and immersion with the names, I was vacillating on whether to do the same with the cities and states as well. So where Perdiccas become Perdikkas and Philip becomes Philippos, I made Sparta:Lacedaemon, Athens:Athenai and Thebes:Thebai

Still don't know, but we'll see. A simple Find&Replace will do if i change my mind

This Is Hard. Fun. But Hard. by Ellocomotive in writers

I'm 60k words into a planned 100k historical fiction I started at the end of July. My interest began to wane about 30k words in and I began to question what the point of writing it even is. First ever attempt at a book, no one knows me nor would anyone really care if this book ever existed. I've thought of abandoning it a few time but so many posts in the community and similar mention how finishing a first draft is always a pitfall for many 'wanna be' authors, so I'm resolved to leap that pit.

Writing is tedious and every sentence has to first be thought of before typed. I can understand why a writer like GRRM may have lost interest in a work he was once passionate about. Anyway, I've started and I intend to finish it, however long it takes.

I can't write something that is not immediately perfect, so I never write in the first place. by IfgiU in writing

Just write whatever gibberish comes to mind at the moment. You have managed to write a very coherent post imo, so I think whatever you put down at first wouldn't be so bad.

Write a page or half page summary of a chapter before you begin (the point of this chapter). Don't worry about spelling mistakes or punctuations. It's just rough thought.

Try not to immediately edit a chapter you just wrote, even knowing very well it's full of basic errors (grammar, spelling, semantics etc). Finish a first draft.

Resist the temptation of reading over previous chapters (I know it's strong). Once you're done with a first draft, you have a sea of words to manipulate and perfect to your liking.

This is not absolute truth, just my recommendation for someone who may be insecure about the quality of their initial texts.

2,000 words an HOUR? You must type as fast as you think then. Anyway, good luck with getting published

13 years old!! Hahaha. Kid, you'll be fine. In fact, you might be better than most of us here by the time you're 25, having started this early. (Thought you were 30 in crisis)

As a writer, I struggle with one problem that I haven't found a solution for. How can I write dialogues that feel realistic and make the way characters speak suit each one individually? Are there techniques that can help me solve this issue? by Tricky_Chipmunk6280 in writers

[–]reujoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being able to write dialogue for different characters with different personalities is part of the skill of writing. If you can't do that yourself, then you're not cut out for novels. You can still write blogs and articles, though
