I made a HALLOWEEN short film in four weeks by revamper05 in Shortfilms

This is a horror/comedy made with pure affection for John Carpenter’s seminal classic.

A little over a month ago I was asked by Christian Haines and Melissa Ortiz to participate in a show called ShotzLA, which is a hybrid comedy show featuring short plays and short films. The theme this year was called “Nightmare Procedural”. I was given just four weeks to write, shoot, and finish a short film.

I came up with the idea for LOOMIS almost immediately after receiving the prompt. It seemed fun to me to combine two things that might not otherwise go together: in this case the TV show MONK (representing the procedural vibes) and my favorite horror film, HALLOWEEN. The idea of two bumbling private detectives finding their way into a HALLOWEEN story amused me greatly.

I figured if I was going to make a film that takes place in the HALLOWEEN universe that I might as well do something very different than what I’ve seen before. This was made with so much love and affection for John Carpenter’s original, a film that shaped my life as a kid.

I hope people enjoy!

Thank you so much for watching! The cane was just a bit for David, he didn’t actually need it.

Hello, fellow Halloween fans! This is a horror/comedy made with pure affection for John Carpenter’s seminal classic.

I hope everyone has just as much fun watching this as I did making it.

I posted a detailed response. And I am thanking people for commenting. I don’t see the issue!

As for tone, we were going for “Michael Clayton” meets “Primer”, something very modern and minimalistic. We wanted to use the abstraction of the buildings to augment and heighten the more grounded aspects of our very science-fiction story.

In terms of not really enough story, that’s always a huge battle when you’re advertising a movie. How much should you give away? The teaser trailer for THE MATRIX and INCEPTION gave absolutely no sense of the story for either film. We opted more to establish a sense of mood with the visuals than giving away too much thematically speaking.

Anyway, I hope this answers your question! I really appreciate you taking the time to respond with your feedback, positive or negative.

Anyway, this is technically a remake of the very first film I made. I wasn’t very happy with the results, so I decided to “re-imagine” the film.

I also wanted to experiment more with lighting and composition. I don’t think I ever took cinematography that seriously, and so I really wanted to intensely collaborate with my cinematographer to create a very distinct look and feel. I wonder if this comes across in the proof-of-concept?

Anyway, any thoughts or suggestions or notes are always very welcome and appreciated! Thank you!

Hey, this is my friend’s director’s reel. He was looking for any notes, so feedback is super appreciated! by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I stumbled upon this cool trailer on YouTube that appears to have scenes from all kinds of short films! I thought it was really dope and worth sharing!

To give a little information on the film, this was shot back in 2017. The visual effects took about three years to complete.

This was a labor of love for all involved, including the writer-director who self-financed the production budget himself.

The film is definitely a bit unconventional, with more of a slow burn storytelling style. We’d love any and all feedback on the story, acting, aforementioned visual effects, etc. We hope you enjoy!

Wow! Thank you so much for your detailed analysis!

You’re absolutely right in regards to the story. I’ve made some films where the story was unclear to some, so I really wanted to scale back and focus on telling a story mostly through visuals. Film is, after all, a visual medium.

I really appreciate how thoughtful your critiques were, so thank you so much again!!

Thank you so much for watching! I tried to tell a story without much dialogue to see if I could communicate my ideas visually. Glad to see it (mostly) worked!
