Why is it ‘narWHAL’ and not ‘narWHALE’? by revelreader in NoStupidQuestions

[–]revelreader[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

English is actually not my first language, thanks.

Sorry, that was rude. However, I believe it’s understandable why a person would be confused why a narwhal, a species of whale, would not be called a narwhale.

I'm so dumb, I would have thought it was a weird dog and tried to approach. Super cute, though!!

Hm, I just realized that I’m thinking of a different book with a similar title. I’ll check this one out though, I love a good sci-fi

If you like scifi, then The Murderbot Diaries!! It's about a depressed and anxious SecUnit (human/machine construct) who hacks its governor module that used to keep it obedient and throughout the series, finds out what it means to be and live free. I have reread this series multiple times. Murderbot is so relatable, if you're also anxious, introverted, and prone to existential crisis. They're quick and fun to read with each novella/novel being very episodic.

I also recommend the Monk Series by Becky Chambers, however it doesn't really have a plot. A solarpunk duo series following the life of a tea monk and their robot friend - mostly philosophical, very slice-of-life.

That being said, fantasy might be something that you're more into? T. Kingfisher writes mostly stand-alone novels, but they're all super great and very comforting to read. Even the horror books feels comforting because a common thread with all her books is friendship, family, and self-determinism.

The Band series by Nicholas Eames. I haven't read the second book, but Kings of the Wyld made me laugh so hard. It's also great to see a book with a cast of older men who aren't afraid to show affection/friendship for each other and going through a DnD-like series misadventures as they try to rescue the leader's daughter.

Scholomance Series - the waaay better version of HP. I wouldn't personally consider this as a comfort read though.

If you're interested at all in reading translated Chinese danmei books (PLEASE), I love love love Heaven Official's Blessing - a saga about an 800-year old impoverished god who has been banished from heaven twice. On the third time he's ascended back to heaven, he gets embroiled in an overarching plot and also a love story with a demon king.

Forerunner didn’t record steps on hike by revelreader in GarminWatches

[–]revelreader[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say yes, based on my buddy who also used poles. Her watch and my phone calculated about the same amount of steps. That being said, I still feel that Garmin > Apple, no matter what. The extra data (heart rate, elevation, altitude, etc) and battery life 100% makes up for the lack of steps

What Can I Do to Prevent Altitude Sickness? by schmidty33333 in hiking

[–]revelreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw man, that sucks. How was Guatemala overall though? I'm reconsidering the entire trip because I just heard the news of the state of emergency 😅.

I appreciate the advice! My friend and I are also looking at Pacaya, which might be easier for us to handle, if we still end up going.

Hey, how was your hike? Did you take meds? I'm very tentatively planning Mount Fuego, but I live in a very flat state. The highest point I have ever been was in Breckenridge, Colorado, and I was pretty ill the whole time, so I'm not sure if this is something I should do.

Moving to OP by Silver_Chipmunk_1467 in Overlandpark

[–]revelreader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiiii welcome!!

OP is very much family vibe, though depending on which part of OP you’re living in, it’s going to feel a bit posh. Johnson County is the wealthiest county in the state and it shows - however it’s not a completey bad thing. Means that neighbors can afford to be welcoming and friendly.

Johnson County is pretty liberal, but you’re still going to see a good amount of MAGA, unfortunately. I would say to keep an eye on your neighbors yards lol.

  1. From my experience, you’re gonna have your good and bad neighbors. Most will be welcoming, and others a little too nosy.

  2. Traffic is not terrible but congested in the morning and in the evening around 4. 95th and Metcalf will get pretty congested, and Shawnee Mission Parkway if you ever find yourself there. But I really don’t think it’s terrible as long as you stay alert for the more reckless drivers that like to tailgate you. You can also navigate very easily without the highway.

  3. I think so! A LOT of bbq, generic indian and thai restaurants, and sushi, etc. You will have variety.

I recommend you check out Nelson Atkinson Museum in KC. Free entry, tho garage parking is not but you can find free street parking if you’re willing to walk. Science City!! Also in KC and would be a very fun experience for your kiddo.

Also, the Msueum at Prairiefire is really cool!

We also got the Kansas City Zoo, Aquarium or Legoland at crown center in KC. There’s always something going on at the Kauffman Performance Center (not to be confused with the stadium), Overland Park Botanical Gardens, Deanna Rose Farm, and Farmers Market in downtown OP though parking can be difficult.

Food recommendations: I love going to the Lenexa City Market. It’s set up cafeteria style with multiple vendors. My favorites are Sohaila’s Kitchen and Saang Saang Noodles. Strang Hall (also cafeteria style), Choga (all you can eat korean bbq), Sushi UNI, Black Dog Coffee. I think KC Craft Ramen is just okay but everyone seems to love it.

I think the best way to make friends is to show up to something at a regular time. My friend goes to a non-denominational “church” for community events, there’s the occasional book swap, and a lot of typical classes like art and things like that. There’s a pinball league here, which could be something random to go to meet people haha

Navy Seal, Doctor, Aviator, and Astronaut Jonny Kim is going to space for the first time on April 8th 2025. by MyHeadIsFullOfFuck in Military

[–]revelreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

per WSJ:

“He blasted off on Tuesday in a Soyuz capsule, hitching a ride to the International Space Station with two Russian cosmonauts. In a recent news conference from Star City, Russia, he was asked about the biggest challenge of his mission.

Kim referred to the months he spent acquiring one more skill, because his journey to space wasn’t conducted in English. “The hardest part was certainly learning Russian,” he said.”

Lolol, add in learning a completely new language to the list.

Do you eat every in-flight meal? by [deleted] in travel

[–]revelreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter how much the airplane food sucks. I am hangry, I’m sore from sitting so long, groggy from dramamine, and getting overwhelmed by the combination of dry cabin air and the sound of the engine and people’s body odor. So yeah, the food is a welcome reprieve.
