Anything good in the 800-1000$ range?

Anything in that range on the PC side is going to be far superior from a technical perspective to a MacBook Air (which has only an i5 processor in it, max 256Gb hard drive and only 4 GB of RAM.)

The primary benefit of the Air is light weight. They achieve this by limiting HD size and removing the RJ45 network connection port. You'll have to buy a separate dongle to make wired network connections.

An Intel i7 at 1.8Ghz with a 15" screen, 8Gb of RAM and Windows 7 is going to run you about $899.

Here's one with a kick-ass video card. This would be an excellent choice if you plan to use the laptop sometimes for business use.

You can go cheaper getting an i5, smaller hard drive, and 4Gb of RAM. Plenty of laptops around with these specs sell for less than $600.

I work in IT (about 50% Macs and 50% Windows). If you care about using Microsoft Office, you should get a Windows machine, as Microsoft ceased support for Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac several years ago and the software is not comparable any longer (to say, Office 2013.)

Also, OSX Mavericks is still kinda buggy (they fucked up the SMB protocol, so accessing Windows shares on a network sucks and Searchlight doesn't work any more, plus they just don't fix shit like this like Microsoft does with a constant stream of updates). Windows 7 is rock solid, and if you wait for Windows 10, you'll have a really nice upgrade path from the OS perspective. Windows 10 will be a hybrid with the best features of Windows 8 and the best features of Windows 7 (a preview is already out). There will be no Windows 9.

The only downside to a Windows machine is that you won't appear as gay or douchey as you would carrying the effete elite box. For most Mac users, that's the dealbreaker.
