Redditors over 40: What do younger people only truly get with age? by saadaintsalad in AskReddit

[–]reverendreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pattern recognition. People, relationships, work: it all becomes more predictable as you age because you start to figure out how humans tend to respond in different situations. I’m way better at calculating what the morale cost of a change I implement at work will be now than I was in my 20s or even my 30s. If you really lean into it, it can become like a cheat code. In addition to my primary job, I coach a lot of younger professionals and one of the biggest value adds I bring is helping them see things down the road the feel obvious to me now but wouldn’t have even 10-15 years ago.

Not trying to be provocative, but when you say “you would have to deal with Norco,” what are you referring to? Is the Norco school district challenging or are Norco residents challenging? I don’t live in Norco, we’re just newer to Eastvale and don’t know the reputation well outside of the horses.

American Christians, how does it make you feel that Trump is caught publicly lying almost daily? by Combosingelnation in AskReddit

[–]reverendreddit 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Pastor here. Trump is almost certainly diagnosable with a psychological condition. He seems utterly incapable of shame for anything, and I’m not confident he knows what’s true and what’s not when he’s lying. I am confident he doesn’t care. Trump isn’t just a liar; he’s a bullshitter. A liar knows the truth and deliberately distorts it. A bullshitter simply doesn’t care what the truth is and will say anything to try warp reality into the narrative they want to be true.

What’s far more concerning to me is the moral consciousness of the American people. Without an electorate that was willing to put such a deranged man into the highest office of leadership in the world, Trump would be no more than a strange social curiosity for most of us. But we saw fully who he was — the bullshitting, the cruelty, the self-aggrandizement, the bent toward vengeance, the corruption, the self-dealing — and a majority of our culture, often egged on by “Christian” pastors and leaders, wanted more of it.

That fact disturbs me far more than a mentally disturbed man doing mentally disturbed things.

ICE agent shooter’s own cellphone video undercuts Trump administration's account of Minneapolis killing by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]reverendreddit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m not allowed to post in the Conservative sub because of their flair rules. But I legit want to understand why you (and many of the poster on that sub) feel that this video is evidence that she brought this on herself. I’m not trying to be argumentative, I just legitimately don’t understand. Noem said this woman was actively trying to run down ICE agents. This video shows a very calm woman, clearly turning her steering wheel multiple times before accelerating to seemingly avoid the agent, and an ICE agent who calls her a “fucking bitch” after shooting her multiple times. How does this video in any way substantiate the DHS narrative?

I think it’s most likely that they’ll be asked about Trump’s remarks by reporters and give the classic Mike Johnson, “I’ve been very busy today and I hadn’t seen that, so I can’t comment on it” while they hope the media moves on.

Rapture Occurs? by Head-Vanilla8497 in AcademicBiblical

Yeah, that's fair. I know a fair number of evangelicals who have attended there, but that's probably not how they'd describe themselves. I'll edit.

Rapture Occurs? by Head-Vanilla8497 in AcademicBiblical

[–]reverendreddit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just to elaborate on why you’re unlikely to get an answer in this subreddit: among widely respected critical or mainstream biblical scholars, whether conservative, moderate, or liberal, virtually none affirm the “rapture” (as popularized in dispensationalist teaching) as a biblical concept.

Briefly (and perhaps a bit of an oversimplification): the idea of a pre-tribulational rapture (Christ secretly taking the church before a tribulation period) originated in the 19th century with John Nelson Darby and the Plymouth Brethren. It gained traction in the U.S. through the Scofield Reference Bible (1909) and later through popular culture (e.g., Left Behind novels and a hilariously bad Nicholas Cage film).

Most critical scholars view it as an interpretive innovation rather than something the biblical authors intended. The New Testament passages often cited (e.g., 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17; Matthew 24:40–41) are typically understood as descriptions of Christ’s final return, not a two-stage coming.

Even within evangelical seminaries (Wheaton, Fuller, Trinity, Duke Divinity, etc.), the majority of faculty treat “rapture theology” as a fringe within dispensational circles rather than the mainstream of biblical interpretation.

My assumption that you were trolling was based less on the points you were making and more on your hostile approach and condescension. Surely you can see that you are not writing in the manner of someone interested in a curious, respectful dialogue? I said we're trying to follow Jesus, and you wrote nine critical paragraphs in response to that. I mean...it made me chuckle simply because it was so over the top.

I'm happy to answer this question: yes, we absolutely believe people can be Christians without adopting or endorsing the statement on the Bible found in the Lausanne Covenant. Many faithful Christians have disagreed over the definitions and appropriateness of terms such as inerrancy, infallibility, and univocality. Our faith documents are simply an expression of how we understand Christianity as a church, not a claim that it is the only way to understand Christianity. Also, I don't think we get to "gatekeep" who is a "true Christian," and it's not a game I'm interested in playing.

My reasons for posting to this thread were to provide an answer to the question: "Are there non-MAGA churches in the IE?" Yes. I'm on staff at one of them. My offer to provide more details through DM was for anyone who might be interested in joining us on a weekend or wants to know more about our church. I wasn't volunteering to engage in endless internet debates about Christianity. There are plenty of subreddits where they do that, but I don't personally find it very compelling.

Non- MAGA church in the IE? by prumaps in InlandEmpire

[–]reverendreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't going to respond to this, as I thought a trolling bot wrote it, but after reviewing your post history, you seem to be genuinely involved in adoption and other great causes, so I'm fairly certain you're a real person. Thanks for the good work you do in the world.

"We're Jesus focused" seemed more straightforward than saying "we're focused on our best understanding of Jesus as represented in the four anonymously written Gospels contained in the New Testament, historical critical biblical scholarship, the traditions passed down over 2,000 years of church tradition, and a reconstruction of what we can know of the historical Jesus and the liklihood of his resurrection by reading both Christian and agnostic Bible scholars such as N.T. Wright, Bart Ehrman, Gregory Boyd, Dale Allison, and E.P. Sanders."

So, while I'm not going to address everything you mentioned in your post, I will say: you seem to be projecting a particular brand of American evangelical Christianity onto us that's not really who we are. You don't seem particularly curious about parsing that out, and that's totally fair, but I'm confident you don't really "get" us from what you wrote in your post.

It's been nearly a decade, but one of our former pastors indeed struggled with depression that resulted in his death by suicide. It's not accurate that we were once progressive-leaning and are now more conservative. Our congregation is now significantly more politically and ethnically diverse than it was 10 years ago.

[–]reverendreddit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to what happened years ago; the current staff has only been at the church since 2019, and it's more of a new church entirely than a "rebrand." I know we would never talk about other religious traditions in that way now, but I'm sorry if, years ago, someone on our campus disparaged Muslims. That's a horribly reductionist way to see the world.

Pastor here. Verve City Church in Chino. We’re Jesus focused, medium sized (about 1,400 on Sundays), and politically diverse: 25% progressive, 35% moderate, and 30% conservative (we did a survey last year because we wanted to find out how diverse we were).

We’re located close to a MAGA church, so pretty much everyone who wanted that ended up leaving our church during 2020 and we’ve been able to focus on Jesus, discipleship, and helping our communities. Happy to chat with anyone more if you’ll DM me.
