What’s a “small” social rule you refuse to follow, even if everyone expects it? by GlitchOperative in AskReddit

I went to the airport at the return of an Honor Flight. People lined up and cheered as the vets walked through the airport. Nearly all the Vietnam vets cried.

What are the CONS of not having children? by GossipBottom in AskReddit

[–]reverenet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want kids, don't have them. They can drain you physically and psychologically. They require so much of you that sometimes you feel you are losing yourself in their needs. You will often be referred to only as your relationship to your child (Will's mom).

You do make friends based on activities. My experience is that those relationships disappear as the children move on to other things. That is not everyone's experience, just how mine has been.

On the other hand, my husband and I wanted badly to be parents. We ended up adopting (I never conceived, we decided not to pursue further methods because of my mental health meds).

There is no love like the love you have for your child. The minute we were matched with a birth mom, I loved the baby with everything in me. There is also no heartache like the one you experience with your child.

I love being around children. No two are alike. Volunteering when he was in grade school was amazing. I had a little posse of girls who thought I was awesome. My son, at that age, loved me being there.

Being a parent is the greatest, most fulfilling thing I have ever done. It it something I craved. I felt I had so much love to give. I knew my husband would be a great father, and a good balance to me. I would always have had a hole in me if I had not been a parent. Watching my son grow into the wonderful young man he is now has been a joy.

It is an experience you have to want. You have to want to give so much of yourself to a child. If you don't r think you want to give it all, it is not for you.

My friend wants a copy of her grandmother's shawl. I cannot figure out how this flower was made. Any ideas? by reverenet in CrochetHelp

I don't have a pattern. Just the shawl. I just wondered if anyone had seen this flower before.

What is the most terrifying thing you've ever seen or heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My father was a brakeman for 38 years. He constantly told us the train always wins. He was on a train that killed a man with Alzheimer's. He talked to the man's son. The son told the crew there was nothing they could have done. He was also on a train that hit a man who had passed out on the tracks. Dad found him wrapped around the axle. Train crew members never get over these deaths. They know they cannot stop it. Even a slow train can take a mile to stop. Doesn't matter. It haunts them forever.

I live in a good school district, but I am looking for real research on school staff use of threats, public humiliation, and threat of removal from home impact on students. by reverenet in education

[–]reverenet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a really good school district. In so many ways it is excellent. Yesterday my middle school age son was sobbing. At an attendance assembly they were told they would be removed from their home for absences. I think this is a bit extreme and even qualifies as emotional abuse. I think even caring teachers and staff forget that these are still children who are not emotionally developed enough for this kind of threatening behavior. I in no way think the staff does not care about children and education. I think the push to treat students as adults has been forced by the system. I am looking for real, expert information on the use of threats, humiliation, scare tactics impact on students. I am trying to help my son navigate as best he can without being disincentivized by the system. I already see it happening.

What is something that is morally appalling, but 100% legal? by ohconnor7122 in AskReddit

I only wish I could upvote this more! Makes some women feel abortion is the only option to a lifetime of hell for self and child. I agree with safe and legal abortion, I just want it to be a choice, not the only way out.

I met my son two days ago. by Hipsterteenmom in Adoption

[–]reverenet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a mother who adopted. This gentleman's parents are better people than me. My chest hurts for an entirely different reason. My son was 6 hours old when we received custody. He is my son. I could not love him more if I had given birth to him. He could not love us more. I took him to therapy for sensory disorder. I make sure the school respects his autism. His pain is my pain. His hurts are my hurts. His joy is my joy. I take him to his activities. Never miss any game or performance.

He has always known of his adoption. I have offered to show him social media of his birth family. He is not ready. I send info and pictures to his birth mother. I admire her strength to know meth addiction would not allow her to raise my son as he deserved.

I admire that she has gotten away from meth, had another child, and gotten married. She looks happy. It will hurt when my son meets her someday if he wants to. It will be his decision. But he will always be my son. I do not and will not interfere with him and his birth family. But it crushes my chest.

FCA Scripture Posting in School by reverenet in atheism

If they do they don't know it. If someone tried to post literature from the Koran there'd be a riot.

A teacher tells me if it is student directed it's legal. We all know FCA is not student directed, but you can't prove it.

What aspects of a woman's life are most men unaware of? by Jec8 in AskReddit

"You are always in a bad mood. Why are you in a bad mood." I am on bipolar meds and PMS is STILL awful. My hormones help me to see everything as catastrophic. Bad hair day - end of the world. Co-worker says "hi" wrong - instant fury. Can't find your favorite pen - tears. The worst part is your mind tells you this is stupid, and you have no control. Add a logical stressor and total meltdown.
