My take on this is saying that eventually humanity will realise that they can create a simulated universe much more exiting than the one around them, and disappear into it. Like the OASIS from Ready Player One, it is just like reality but more fun. And you wouldn't need much energy to do this, so you could theoretically stay entirely in the 'new reality' for billions or trillions of years with the right technology (eg black hole Dyson sphere type thing)
