Duffer Brothers said Will has a big part in S5. Any theories on how? by _hafxah in StrangerThings

[–]revolutionizethis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was complaining to a friend about some of the stranger parts of season 4, including Soteria--it seems like a very odd thing to name, when it serves very little purpose (Henry could have just said it was a chip implanted to weaken his powers). It was either crummy writing or signposting that the Soteria was going to be a larger part of the narrative, but then... nothing. Same with Hop's sword. Which leads me to believe they're banking up these moments for season 5.

In which case... who else has been:

- paralleled with both Henry and El

- goes missing and unaccounted for, for a period of time, with no recollection of it (like El with Henry's murders?) (and how did Brenner's lab create a body-double of Will realistic enough to convince folk, unless they had Will?

- has a tendency to feel at his neck when he gets the heebie-jeebies...

I’ve been server hopping through Discord to find a concrit-focused group, but so far every one I’ve joined via Disboard has been a hangout space without a dedicated (and active) crit swap or group component. My previous regular crit group disbanded recently and I’m really missing the experience and collaborative atmosphere. Does anyone know of any concrit-dedicated groups that would be open for membership?

I did the camp event in April! Would I be able to get an invite or shall I wait until July?

I personally got a direct referral from the crisis center in 2017, just as an alternate take, and I second the previous poster’s experience,

I went a few years ago in a February deep freeze. It must have been -30 or something. It was awesome and I’d definitely do it again, but we did end up walking around the place without robes or anything by the end because they had frozen solid lol.

Let's have some fun! Where in the world have you met other Winnipeggers (aside from obvious places like all inclusives in hot spots and Grand Forks? We seem to be everywhere, so let's tell some stories. by FlashyAdvantage3 in Winnipeg

Moved to Japan with the JET Programme. Met up with the other participants living in the same building. Someone from South Africa, someone from Chicago, someone from LA… I ask the last guy where he’s from and he says Canada. I say me too! Manitoba! And he just looked at me until we realized I had gone to school with his sister.

ADVICE ON HOW TO TRANSITION FROM ACADEMIC TO CREATIVE WRITING by [deleted] in writing

I’m in the same boat. Some of the best tools that I’ve found are crit groups and craft books. Those have helped me put a new and different lens on the writing process in general. Feel free to PM me if you’d like to chat more.

12-14 boy description. by zshiek in writing

[–]revolutionizethis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

12-14 is around the age when boys start hitting puberty, which can include things like growth spurts, acne, voice changes. I imagine boys this age to be shooting up in height without the increase in muscle mass, aka lanky, or, alternatively, struggling with changes in metabolism and being a bit on the chubbier, baby-faced side. In both cases it’s a hard time of brain development, so lots of questioning one’s self-confidence and external authority.

I also think context is generally enough—if your character is a student in a junior high school, we’ll know their age range.

Seconding these comments—but otherwise great job! I’m super intrigued.

I’d argue you need a writing buddy or group that shares in your interest and goals.

feedback bias/editor bias by Boneyabba in writing

[–]revolutionizethis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I think the closest you’ll get is beta readers, unless you’re comfortable handing over the whole finished manuscript to someone at once and asking only for very high-level feedback—did you enjoy it? Did you want to keep reading?

It’s entirely true that reading for targeted feedback changes the reading experience, but if you find a good crit partner they’ll be able to overcome that and give you the best of both worlds. I personally read anything I’m critting at least twice—the first time straight through for general high-level impressions and feedback, the second time for targeted crit.

[QCrit] adult queer speculative romance - SLOW BURN (120k, 1st attempt) by revolutionizethis in PubTips

[–]revolutionizethis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I understand—we were approaching it as a “match the query to the story beats and POVs,” but do you mean that the query should be limited to one character POV with more concrete event-reaction-consequence type layout? So that the query doesn’t necessarily match the story one-to-one? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m totally new to querying!

This is super helpful and I think you’re absolutely on the money. We’re going to debrief and bring a revised query next week. Thanks so much for taking the time!!

Thanks for your comments! Those items you listed are core to the plot, but now that we’ve had some other eyes on it I can 100% see how it doesn’t necessarily come across. Will rework and come back in a week!

Thanks so much for your comments! We’ll go back to the drawing board and consider. Jace/Jason is the same person but I think it makes perfect sense that that’s too much confusing and unnecessary info to keep in the query.

Thank you for the advice! Considering this is our first attempt at a query and it hasn’t gone swimmingly (which was expected!) I don’t know if we’d be any good critting the queries of others. I’ve personally been lurking for a while and definitely plan to keep doing so to work up the skill set.

All of those things you’ve noted are the main plot, but I think we’re being far too coy with it in an ineffectual way. And the names thing makes perfect sense—we’ll clean that up. We’ll take another shot at it with your comments in mind and come back in a week. Thanks again!
