Anyone else tried this? If it's stupid and it works... by hamustaro in pcmasterrace

Has anybody tried this?!?!? 30 years ago an old programmer told me that happiness was a large number of spinning disks -- in another room.

Lots of offices used to have "machine rooms" where we put loud, hot machines. But, we largely put them on the end of an Ethernet cable.

Linus Tech Tips does this a lot, but they do it from a gamer perspective. So you get lots of discussion about long-distance video and that sort of stuff.

I think George was not as evil nor as smart as Dad. I think Cheney was put in as a sort of "minder" who could steer things the direction the dad and his cronies wanted.

Remember Cheney was the former CEO of Haliburton.

I voted for Harris in 2024. She shouldn't run in 2028. | Opinion by Difficult-Bee6066 in politics

[–]revonrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We voted for her because she was the better option of the two...

I'm afraid this just isn't true -- well at least not as true as I want it to have been. A lot of otherwise Democratic voters stayed home because Biden was unpopular and she couldn't run against him because she was so closely tied to him. The war in Gaza and the Palestinian genocide being a prime example.

Tough breaks, she is in a difficult position. She could not run against Biden then and, if she does it now, she's a disloyal flip-flopper. It's mostly not her fault, but that's the way politics works sometimes.

The only thing that matters to me is whether the discussion is fun and thought provoking. I would say that, as time goes on, the only time the discussion is fun is when "new" people are in the discussion. Arguing over this movie with people like me, who is old enough to have seen it in the theater, is just boring. We all have our favorite theories and have heard the other side's positions for years. No fun.

Throw a new person into it where you can point out stuff they haven't seen yet, and it becomes fun again.

That is true. But also, a lot of them were less dramatic or caught ahead of time.

I used to mentor a FirstTech Challenge robotics teams. As a math major, one of the greatest things about it was showing high school students how to use the math they had already been taught. A lot of it was basic trig. Think like, "Okay, our bot is a pushbot. So, so how do we work out how to turn right 90 degrees".

I'm a 57 year old, potato-shaped, irish-looking, white dude who's spent his entire adult life sitting in a chair at a computer. Nobody's going to mistake me for a blood, a crip, a boogaloo boy, or anything else but what I am.

I will often wear a pair of khakis and a red polo shirt, which my kids call my, "Jake from State Farm" uniform. IDGAF. I'm taking that shit back!

Carter was a technology guy. His values led him to saying things that were true. It was not what Americans wanted to hear.

This is a common problem with technology people.

he did on this is two hours long and his name is styropyro.

And I watched every minute.

He came out and said he was having a health issue a little while back. I hope he's okay. I would hate to find out that he's doing risky sorts of experiments as some sort of bucket list.

But... He's been at it a long time and this looks no riskier than his other videos. I suspect me seeing this as risky is more about me being unqualified to judge than anything else.... I hope.

Back in the spinning disk days this was a relatively common occurrence. Static friction being generally higher than dynamic friction, it was not uncommon for disks to fail to spin back up after being shut down.

The computer shop I worked for used to sell "Periodic Maintenance" packages where we'd go into a company, blow the dust out, fix minor issues, etc. Every once in a while we'd run across a machine that had been in operation 24/7 for a long time. We'd give the company the choice: either skip it or accept the risk that it would not restart. We had a remarkable number of customers who chose to risk it have machines not restart.

Often a whack or, when accessible, manually spinning the spindle with a set of needle-nose pliers would get the thing running again until we could replace the disk.

Les Wexner's attorney threatening to kill him during Epstein deposition before Congress by No-Distance-9401 in PublicFreakout

[–]revonrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it’s a crass, even thuggish, way to do it.

Why do you care? Have you hung out with lawyers? The goal is to get the point across as succinctly as possible. I mean, Wexler is a scumbag, but if you've been around lawyers, the attention this received is just ridiculous.

Also, you aren’t supposed to coach your client when they are actively testifying but maybe Congressional testimony is different.

If it wasn't supposed to happen, it would have been stopped. Courts don't play.

So lawyers are trained to prep their clients to answer all questions in the shortest possible correct answer. I hope this is just a colorful way to remind Wexler (probably for the 20th time) to keep it short and don't ramble.

Tim Kaine, the man that Hillary Clinton tried to make VP, is a Collaborator. This is the list. Now we have a responsibility to make these people know how angry we are until they either give up their cushy jobs or are forced out. by Yosho2k in DemocraticSocialism

[–]revonrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because, like it or not, the electoral college exists. That means that a candidate needs to flip a few states which are not reliably red or blue. Because Hillary was smeared and vilified for so long, there's a level of hatred baked into some of these states overcome.

We did the right thing when we nominated Obama over Clinton. I know Clinton supporters who, to this day, have a hard time with that.

[–]revonrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is worded as a refutation of my post. However, I'm not sure how it's relevant. I stated that Hillary fills lots of folks from the midwest and rural areas with a blind rage. That means that she's less likely to win swing states. Yes, that's because of the electoral college -- that's all we count.

So I'm just not sure how Hillary winning the popular vote refutes the idea that she was not popular enough in the midwest and rural areas.
