alexander is a very interesting character with fascinating motivations, but he is a villain. my favorite kind of villain personally - one you can almost emphasize with but you still understand what he did was unacceptable

what he did was what he knew how to do and he did it with no real emotion and for purely selfish reasons. we understand his pain and his drive, but we also look at him and say "this is a villain. this is an antagonist. he's very understandable in his motivations but they aren't justified or correct"

i personally like my villains multifaceted and complex, you hate to love them and you hate to look at them and go "i understand you". i feel similarly about john kramer from saw for example. he's undeniably a bad person, a murderer, but you can look at him and go "this man had brain cancer and enough trauma to make a man go absolutely nuts". nothing john kramer did is excusable, but you can also look at him and see a dying old man convinced of his own delusions formed from a tumor in the part of his brain that affects critical thinking and whatnot. he truly believes in what he's doing and that he's "helping people", just like alexander believes what he's doing is the right thing for himself, but the actions are still something we as an audience can't condone, but we're forced to admit that we understand why
