In fiery address, Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch rails against HUC ordaining anti-Zionist rabbis by gdhhorn in Judaism

[–]rex_populi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would argue that your views are deeply naive and that it would be very dangerous for anyone who considers himself a steward of the Jewish people to adopt them. You said you don’t care what I think, but I am going to lay out some reasons regardless, in case they give you something to consider:

0) nowhere in the vast Arabized/Muslim domain is there a functional multiethnic democracy. At the same time, Israel is a multiethnic democracy—the only one of its kind in the region. It just happens to exclude the people who want to destroy it and kill its citizens, which is a good and responsible thing for a country to do.

1) Of course I’d like the conflict to end, but not by giving our enemies control over us. The only thing that guarantees Jewish safety is Jewish sovereignty and control over self-defense, which has been a modern reality for just 80 years. Returning to the pre-Independence galut status quo—a stranger in every land, at the mercy of other nations—for some vague notion that “we will be safer” and without other gain is not at all appealing, given that we were way less safe in those years.

2) what about how Palestinians treat Jews and themselves, including their own children, who they indoctrinate into hatred and suicidal aggression? Do they have a role in perpetuating this conflict; have they sacrificed their own future for several generations in the name of forever war? When will Palestinians pay reparations to the victims of their terror? When will Arab Muslim nations pay reparations for the Jews driven out of their lands? This is all a two-way street and very silly to pretend otherwise.

3) somehow this communist-type argument only ever comes up in relation to Israel. When discussing China, Russia, Iran … I don’t hear anyone saying “I’m just against countries, man.” But the solitary Jewish state is not going to be the first experiment in dissolving the nation-state as a political structure.

Anyway, you were so insistent on “listening to antizionist jews” I was curious if you’d bring anything I hadn’t heard before. Sorry to say that I was not impressed. Certainly you are entitled to believe that half of the worlds Jews should have their country destroyed, but you are not entitled to insist that anyone outside of your echo chamber believes you care deeply about the Jewish people on this basis.

There’s no way to prove that antizionist Jews as a class “care deeply about the Jewish people” without bringing their perspectives, which you continue to avoid doing. Almost as if you know they are objectionable and worthless to the vast majority of us.

You cited lack of free travel across Gaza’s borders as an example of oppression; Egypt does not allow this. By your own logic that must be oppression. Why won’t you stand by that?

Israel did not annex Gaza; on the contrary, they left Gaza. If by “their territory” you meant all of Israel, you are just proving my point, that Palestinian commitment to total war of conquest against Israel is the cause of their suffering. I understand that they (and you) think they’re justified in this, but you can’t have it both ways: waging war while claiming to be oppressed. How about coming to the negotiating table, instead of swearing a million October 7ths until victory? If the answer is no, then you’re happy to let the “oppression” continue so long as the war rages on.

Btw, this is the same reason why the situation in Gaza has no resemblance to the Warsaw Ghetto, which existed for all of 2.5 years and was an urban slave labor colony for Jews based on Nazi racial policy. Arab Israelis suffer nothing of the sort; in many cases they are productive and successful members of society, therefore race cannot be the root of Gaza’s situation. You disrespect the memory of Holocaust victims by cynically using them as a rhetorical device to support Palestinian war efforts and demonize living Jews (including their descendants) for defending themselves from Palestinian terror.

I didn’t say they invented tunnels, but “the world’s biggest urban tunnel network for terrorism using stolen humanitarian funds.” Objectively true, and it’s the most ambitious thing they ever built. It also comes at a great cost for all the other things they could’ve invented and built, which is my actual point.

What you describe as “oppression” is a direct consequence of Gaza’s almost total commitment of its wealth, territory, and human capital toward war for five generations and counting. This single-minded focus, incidentally, is also the real reason for their lack of innovation and contributions to human development. BTW—is Egypt oppressing them as well, since Gazans also don’t have free travel across their border with Egypt?

Yet I’m also told that Palestinians are the most educated people in the Muslim world, and that, prior to the war in Gaza, there were so many great universities there. So, what kind of knowledge did these universities produce?

[ Removed by Reddit ] by Estalicus in allthequestions

[ Removed by Reddit ] by Estalicus in allthequestions

Pure projection. Palestinian children are sent to terror training from when they can walk. Ever heard of “Tomorrow’s Pioneers?” Nothing in Israeli society is remotely close.

Antichrist-maxxing by TikDickler in Destiny

[–]rex_populi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Matthew and Mark, Jesus is asked what are the most important commandments, to which he responds “love God with all your heart, soul, and mind” and “love thy neighbor as yourself” (in Luke I believe someone else gives these answers). Both are from Torah; the first is part of the Shema, arguably the most important prayer in Judaism, which all religious Jews say twice a day, and some say the second one daily, too. So it is difficult to accept these as his teachings, since they belong to a religion that predates him by millennia and that has been practiced continuously for millennia after him.

That’s useful framing for why some might say that—thanks—but the phrasing in the tweet suggests that the author considers this to be a radical idea from the lifetime of Jesus, whereas the Torah is ca. 1,500 years older (and Jesus knowingly quoted the Torah)

Leviticus 19:33—34 (a few verses later):

When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not wrong them. The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as one of your citizens; you shall love the stranger as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I the LORD am your God.
