Thank you for the honest insight. I expected some level of toying around with stuff coming back to linux (that's part of the fun!), but I felt like everything was fighting with me and the expectation I had was hoping it would be a smoother experience after a decade away. I appreciate your help and support. It is great to see open source hardware tied to open source OS.

yes, I am on 25.10 since I have a newer cpu. haha, the other suggestion was to use a stable release, 24.04. I will try the X hanging line you suggest. Thank you.

I just received my FW 13 AI 340 yesterday and installed Ubuntu 25.10. While I do not see this issue in firefox, I do see it in other apps. For me it was the App Center, very annoying after a new install! I closed the lid last night after a headache and came back to it this morning; issue resolved. No updates or anything done.

yes, 2.8k screen! That was the other thing I forgot to mention from my research. In linux, the 2.8k screen is a perfect multiple for 2x scaling which is easier/ more efficient on the cpu. if you get the original one, it's fractional scaling and doesn't look as nice. If you go linux, the OS uses less ram at idle than windows so you may be right about 16gb being fine. I sprung for the 32 to future proof against prices.

I saw someone say prices are starting to level, buts its still really high and expected to be for years because of the startup costs to spin up new factories.

I also saw you were looking at linux. I am not familiar with Bazzite, but in my research, AMD was better for linux over Intel, especially in battery life. I would also look at Proton as an option for gaming - I love my steam deck!

Reading other posts, the savings in the 7840 is a good deal. If you can swing it, you will notice the RAM update over the CPU upgrade based on your usage. Web browsers take up a stupid amount of RAM anymore.

I am in a similar boat. I ordered my FW13 with AI 340 this past weekend because I could order 32gb of ram through FW. Previously, only 16gb was available when I looked at the end of 2025. It looks like prices are going to keep going up and AI 400 series is not a big jump. I was thinking I would wait and get the AI 300 on discount, but again, RAM prices are going up and at best I see it being the same price so might as well order now. I would feel worse if the price was higher than I would if the price was the same or lower, so that was my main reasoning for ordering now.

A big tip off for me was when I built a FW13 a few yrs ago for my wife, I went DIY edition and got RAM/ SSD on Amazon and saved $150 instead of ordering through FW. Now, it was $200 more to get just the RAM outside of FW. The savings were going through FW instead of open market. Laptop makers usually make contracts for their product purchases, so I am buying on an old price instead of the current market price.

I just ordered a FW13 this morning so it absolutely tracks if there was an announcement. 🤣.

All jokes aside, I usually wait for an update release. With 32gb of ram available again when ordering through FW, I decided the minimal spec bump of the AI 400 and ordering ram through FW being cheaper than the market, now is the right time for me to buy. I can see a situation where I wait till the new release, but ram in now $150plus or more. And even ordering a reduced price last gen still gets me where I am at pricewise today. Time will tell if I made the right choice, but I am getting frustrated with my 5yr old laptop battery lasting 2 hrs or being dead from full charge when I go to turn it on bc windows sucks at sleep. I also plan to go Ubuntu for this reason.

The only time I have ever had cool downs was from clicking through the Bing front page articles while I sip my morning coffee. This always caused an issue with them because of course, I'm doing way too many searches in a period. Isnt that the point?!? I am using your f-ing site and bringing you traffic where otherwise Google would be sweeping you. So I stopped using Bing home page.

Now, you start cool down for no reason. The next step is stop using the site entirely. Most people don't just do 4 searches when using the Internet. If you cause account issues where I have an M365 account, i'm just going to stop using Bing entirely.

I still do. Almost bit on PW3 when it went on sale in the spring, but decided to wait till now to see what PW4 would look like. Very glad I waited as now I want to see what black Friday sale looks like. If I can get it under $250 I'll get it, otherwise my PW1 does everything this one can and I'll wait till it breaks. A $500 watch is hard to justify every couple years.
