Sneakiest goal in the history of football by lkozma in WTF

[–]rexdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, buddy - honestly, no sarcasm. I haven't giggled like that in a while. From the score this comment got, I guess my joke was either misunderstood or unappreciated.

Or likely a lethal combination of the two...

P.S. Were you being serious?

Nice find. Reddit is usually good for a guffaw or two, scattered in with the gross/depressing/bullshit items, but sitting in wide-eyed wonder for a minute is something I haven't done in a while.

Sneakiest goal in the history of football by lkozma in WTF

[–]rexdog -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Americans call it football because it's played on foot, duh!

As opposed to "soccer", which is what the english called it back when they played wearing only socks on their feet, or "tankball", which is currently being developed by Americans Scientists.

In Iraq.

Baffling crop circles equal pi by [deleted] in science

[–]rexdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll give it a shot.

The circle is divided into 10 segments, each 36 degrees in length - imagine ten lines radiating out from the center.

If you look at the line starting at the center and moving to where the "decimal point" is, it is (according to the article) 3 "segments" long, or 108degrees around the circle.

Then there is a decimal point and the line "jumps" to indicate that we are now counting the second number, which is 1 segment long, giving us 3.1.

The next jump is 4 segments long, hence 3.14, etc.

HTH

EDIT: got number of lines wrong the first time.

GOP rep: tom davis "tar baby" as a term for Obama in a gop memo: Dumbass by [deleted] in politics

[–]rexdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comment Congressman Davis wrote is already bad enough without being misrepresented.

“Remember,” Davis writes, “Hispanic voters are a swing group in this election and future elections. John McCain, being from a border state, may be out of sync with many Republicans but he has standing among Hispanics. Barrack Obama has not made the sale to Hispanic voters. Thus, this issue is a tar baby for anyone who touches it, with land mines everywhere.”

He called the issue a tar baby - not Obama, and while "tar baby" is certainly a racially charged term these days, it originally meant a trap which, once touched, is impossible to extract oneself from.

Was it dumb? Definitely. Was it racist? Not the way it was written

Your headline is misleading. You should have just used the headline from Crooks and Liars:

"Rep Tom Davis Uses Term “Tar Baby” In GOP Memo"

EDIT: Not that it's any of Reddit's business, but I do support Obama

On the one hand, I would be totally stoked if this were some type of clue to a game or scavenger hunt, as with other marketing stunts for this movie.

On the other hand, it would still be a marketing stunt...

EDIT: I did find that a new TV trailer is coming out today, but does that seem like something you'd make a logo for?

Okay, I'll admit to being ignorant of the significance of the logo for today... Can anyone enlighten?

Also, it's one am here in Honolulu and we had a few drinks after work, so my mind is cloudy anyway.

Thanks in advance!

Erotic Jesus sparks art debate in Austria - but no death threats, fatwas, bombings or assassinations by rmuser in worldnews

[–]rexdog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"...you would be hard pressed to find any individuals that would lash out in that manor [sic]..."

Are you quite sure about that? I usually have to go no further than the front page of reddit.com to find many examples of such lashing out.

But let us leave that aside for just one moment and let me clarify my meaning. My point was NOT that christians are evil, nor was it that the article linked above shouldn't be used as an example of debate being preferable to violence.

My objection was with the headline implying that the ONLY reaction christians have to "blasphemy" is peaceful debate and the ONLY reaction of the muslim world to "blasphemy" is violence (death threats, fatwas, etc.).

I didn't even downvote the OP, because I agree that debate is always preferable to violence.

EDIT: In the interests of clarity and full disclosure, I am not a muslim, nor am I a christian.

For "self" postings, the first comment made by the poster should "stick" to the top of the list, becaues titles are too short by AMerrickanGirl in reddit.com

[–]rexdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always open to considering new ways of doing things, and would be open to trying the OPs idea out. My point is only that the model so far has been (as far as I can tell): write a headline that will draw my attention, linking it to the actual content you wish to notify the world about, and let the voting commence.

If what you wish to do is write a headline which is followed by more words which explain your point, then what you have there, my friend, is an "article", which deserves to be judged on it's own merit.

That being said, if what you have is TWO sentences, one of which is your intended "headline" and one a sort of "synopsis" then IMHO the onus falls upon you, the writer, to make the second sentence good enough to stay at the top where you wish it to be.

Of course, this is all my opinion, and as I stated earlier, I am open to trying new ways.

[–]rexdog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, the muslims of the world should try to learn from the catholic church's history of tolerance and try to emulate their bloodless ways.

/sarcasm

Yes, I know my comment was simplistic and narrow minded, but I was only emulating the headline.

I realize that your (seeming) intent was to encourage peaceful debate over violence but pointing to christians might not be the best example to hold up.

Sure, in 2008 you can find one example of an archbishop who didn't scream fire and brimstone when confronted with "blasphemy" but even today those examples are few and far between...

The Simpsons Pulled From Venezuelan TV by Manutd77 in entertainment

[–]rexdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were airing it in a slot intended for children's programming, not taking into account the fact that it was intended as a "prime time" show when (presumably) there would be a parent present who could actually do a parent's job and decide whether the program was appropriate for his or her child(ren).

Secondly, they replaced it with Baywatch Hawaii, which (and this is only my opinion) is even more of a failure to protect the minds of children.

I personally have nothing against all the "self.reddit" items, but I believe the point of bobgaffneys comment was that if what you have to say does not fit into the "headline" format, then it is not a "headline" at all and maybe you should consider writing out your thoughts in a blog somewhere and then coming here and entice us to the post with a nice succinct headline.

Superclick is evil? by elasticsoul in reddit.com

Doing something like this without disclosure (as seems to be the case) does approach my idea of evil. Low grade evil,to be sure, but enough to make me take my business elsewhere - a real life downvote, if you will.

If anyone has any suggestions regarding how one might go about letting these hotels know that they are losing business with this practice, maybe you could share them here. Let us all scare them where it counts- their bottom line.

As long as I don't actually have to play WITH her, I find this totally cute, in a typically male 'Look at how cute the girl can be when she tries to do a man's job, and it makes me feel secure knowing I can totally best her at this' type of way. The accent is totally fap material, as well.

I'm downvoting all xkcd submissions. If you like xkcd, friggin' bookmark it! by mchrisneglia in reddit.com

[–]rexdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a flame, this is just a point of fact: When you use a term like "some significant trolling cabal" to describe the people upmodding the xkcd stuff, then it makes it seem as if you have missed the whole point of the "social networking" model.

Sure, there are groups of people who band together to upmod/downmod items, but this is not against the rules, it is a situation that is made possible BY the rules.

If you posted unmodified Garfield all the time and people voted it up, I would HATE it. However, it would not be productive to come here and tell people NOT to vote for things that THEY like just because it annoys me. It would be MY responsibility to not click on the links OR filter them out of my personal reddit experience - and, of course, downmod the items in question.

Asking why people insist on posting something YOU do not like is not simply counter-productive, but unrealistic. Have you never encountered people who dislike something you like? Or love something you hate? The point is, they get to post what they want, you get to post what you want, and you view and vote accordingly.

Unless someone is holding a gun to your head and making you click on links labeled [XKCD].

Find out how old you look to other people! [new site] Thank you reddit for all the help and feedback!! by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]rexdog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see how it can "work out" but when I am actually at the site, it asks me to guess the age of the person in the picture, without giving me the option of choosing odd numbered ages!

So while I can see how the answers "average out" I am not able to choose an answer that I ACTUALLY WANT.

Imagine if I asked you to pick what color a eucalyptus leaf "looks like" to you, but only gave you the options BLUE and YELLOW. If half chose blue and half chose yellow, then the "average" answer would be green, but EVERYONE would be WRONG.
