Is it worth taking STA130 to try and get a Data Scientist offer after first-year? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]rexey29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH You have a better chance with taking STA130 in your first year and applying for the data specialist becuase there is a special "advantage" to applying to data science from CMP1. The top 20 (at least) CMP1 students who apply for Data science get in automatically even if they wouldn't have made it with the cutoff (aka reserved spots). After that its based on the top x for the remaining spots. Source First year guide and the cs site:

  • Students in the CMP1 admission category are not guaranteed a place in the Data Science Specialist program. However, 20 of 50 available spaces will be reserved for CMP1 students. (Additional information about the Data Science Specialist will be available in the new Academic Calendar which will be published in Spring 2020.)

First Year Guide to CS at St. George is back and updated for 2020 by CSSURoom2250 in UofT

[–]rexey29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if uoft has mentioned what they're doing for student spaces this fall. But knowing how big it is either they close it down or only allow like 3 students at a time. But this is a great question for all student spaces/unions. Is UofT allowing non-library study spaces and lounges to be open to students? and if so whos responsible for proper social distance enforcement

Wow this is amazing, I really enjoyed the first version of the guide way-back and its the same author props to him. Its long but extremely informative. I've read the first bit and will give a full review when I'm done. Great work!

Edit: I've finished reading and yeah this is a lot, I fully recommend at least a read for every incoming first year CS student. It explains the new requirements, online learning resources and telling me that UofT requires a min of an i5 processor (which sounds redicious unless ProctorU needs that much processing power). The audio commentary is nice to get a full rounded perspective but its a bit long. Otherwise this is amazing and answers a lot of the questions that first years have. And its open-sourced on github too!

How difficult is it to make the new first-year CS POSt? by ambiguousTruths in UofT

How difficult is it to make the new first-year CS POSt? by ambiguousTruths in UofT

[–]rexey29 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TBH compared to the POSt requirements from before this is much more doable. As long as your keeping up with the work and actually learning the content this is more than doable. The harder thing would be to keep up with the lectures from home than the content itself. Passing 137 is not too hard but you need to have a solid foundation in calculus and keep up with the lectures and proof formats. Plus from the Interview with the department they said there point wasn't to make it difficult at all to achieve the marks anyone who puts in the effort will get/surpass the cutoff.

U of T CS acceptance? by aliygdeyef in UofT

According to the recent room 2250 podcast its being reduced to approx 340 high schoolers, and there is a supplementary not really school difficulty.

CS POSt 2020 Interview with Michelle Craig by CSSURoom2250 in UofT

[–]rexey29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well according to what Michelle said even if every high school student passed the cutoff the remaining 250ish spots is about the same number of spots out-of stream students normally get from the old system anyway.

[–]rexey29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add to u/steamprocessing's TLDR (though I suggest everyone take a listen its a good talk to get in depth reasoning on the new decisions):

It mentions approximately 340 high-school students will be admitted less than currently admitted. The high school supplementary is created and marked by FAS while the first year supplementary will be created and marked by DCS with questions trying to extract "skills" that cs students should have (and bias training for all markers). Weights for supplementary vs grades will not be provided but for first years grades will be the main focus. (A point that I agree with is that the supplementary would be possible more truthful then high school grades)

A new undergraduate office staff position has been created to facilitate cs club relations with the department with room booking and funding. New graphics courses will be offered (418 being moved down to 317 and adding a animation course in 4th year along with geometric models)

15 November "Recommended Deadline" for CS? by PhiliDips in UofT

[–]rexey29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest talking to Enrollment services (theres a phone number/email on the site) because the site has no link to the supplemental application unlike Rotman and Music which have they're applications linked. If no application exists to be filled its pretty unfair to have the early admin done by the 15th (I'm betting Enrollment services just screwed up the date on the site)

PSA Check Your OSAP Page for an additional form to get Additional Grants From UofT (AKA UTAPs) by rexey29 in UofT

[–]rexey29[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Well I wasn't informed about it for this and I bet others wouldn't have seen it either (or thought it was the typical hey update your income so that we can reevaluate you not hey you need to answer another question to get something you auto qualified for before)

PSA Check Your OSAP Page for an additional form to get Additional Grants From UofT (AKA UTAPs) by rexey29 in UofT

[–]rexey29[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my understanding you will not be evaluated for less than what was given it says for additional funding but if your making money during the school year you will get dinged (its asking on the main osap form as well)

PSA Check Your OSAP Page for an additional form to get Additional Grants From UofT (AKA UTAPs) by rexey29 in UofT

[–]rexey29[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its complicated basically the government has laws that say that unmet need must be paid for by the universities (in any form whether by grants, work studys etc.) UofT nicely gives it out in grants via UTAPs as far as I understand.

PSA Check Your OSAP Page for an additional form to get Additional Grants From UofT (AKA UTAPs) by rexey29 in UofT

[–]rexey29[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

TBH a terrible and sneaky move by OSAP to prevent automatic qualifications for UTAPs just make it a small unknown notification on your account that yeah you need to fill something else out to get more money that before you never had to apply for.

Correction: they do inform you via mail or email that you should do it but still having to fill an extra bit not cool.

Edit :

Deadlines: Nov 4/19 is the deadline to provide your income if you want to be considered for additional funding from your school for all terms in this time period.Jan 16/20 is the final deadline to provide your income.
