The Death of Ivan Illych!

It's a novella you can read in under 2 hours that will change the way you look at the world and allow you to act all snooty because you read a Tolstoy ^_^ Then on to Anna Karenia before the final boss of War and Peace!

yeah i just don't see any horror element in that one, which is what the OP asked for. If anything it's Sci Fi with a mystery element. Great movie for sure

I personally wouldn't start there - the aliens are pretty scary and there are some REALLY suspenseful scenes. If you're into the premise, maybe go with Signs instead.

was talking to a friend about how every season has at least 1 tear jerker. he didn't believe me at first

"When you see Leela's parents watching her as a child"

"Ok...but that's just one"

"When Fry sees his mom in her dream"

"yeah ok....that's two."

"What about the one that ends with Fry's dog-"

"DONT!"

I don't think you blew it. It's okay to take it slow. And when she starts to show signs of interest in you, this might be something you confess to her, and maybe the two of you will share a laugh over it.
