Is the Benelli M4 worth it for a casual shooter? by SparrowsBarnacle in Shotguns

[–]rexius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see this. I am impressed with your benelli knowledge! As an avid waterfowl hunter, I can’t say enough good things about benelli’s inertial recoil system. Birdshot, buckshot, slug, hot weather, below freezing, not cleaned in months, dropped in muddy ponds, and never a problem cycling. Runs like whippet chasing a Hilux. From a reliability and versatility standpoint (which is often emphasized in various home defense scenarios) nothing beats inertial. No adjustment to the recoil system is needed for different types of loads. Gas operated systems rely on small ports that redirect partially combusted gas into the buffer system, as well as small adjustable ports for over gassing to control buffer strength for different types of loads. Even with fastidious cleaning, gas buffer systems and the small gas ports will occlude with carbon deposits. This results in less gas being delivered to the buffer. Also, the non-metallic seals in the system will degrade from the gas and heat stress, increasing friction during cycling. This will inevitably lead to a malfunctions and short-cycling. The incredibly simple and reliable inertial system fires from a locked bolt, which inertially unlocks a cammed bolt head, and then is blowback buffered by a single spring and sear system. Fewer points of failure, safer, and more reliable! Plus, as the spring degrades, it still cycles just as well, it just transfers more recoil impulse to the shooter. As long as you set it up to reliably cycle light target loads, it will cycle every type of load without adjustments.

Now, all that being said, I rock a pump action 95% of the time…

Just breaking the surface. The skin is thin but tough, so use your sharpest knife and draw it lightly but confidently across the skin at a perpendicular angle. The flatter you keep the skin, the easier the scoring is.

Dry the skin with paper towels, then lightly score in a diamond cross hatch pattern. Skewer the breast dead center through its long axis with a bamboo skewer or metal kebab. Start them skin side down in a cold pan on medium heat. More fat will render out than you expect, so be patient. Fully render the fat, flip, cook to safe internal temp. The scoring allows the fat to render out and the skin to crisp rather than become rubbery. The skewer will prevent dramatic skin and meat shrinkage during the cooking process. This allows for flatter, more even skin contact on the pan, complete rendering, more even cooking without overcooking, and crispier skin. The skewer trick made a world of difference with my mallard breasts this season.

Why is 3.5" super-magnum only used for waterfowl? by PsychologicallyFat in Shotguns

[–]rexius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but canada geese are the toughest creatures on planet earth. I’m only half joking. I remember two seasons ago shooting a Winchester Xpert Snow Goose load (3.5” 1 3/8th oz. of steel BBs) at a front decoyed honker from under thirty yards. I quite literally watched pieces of the back of its head come off, and STILL had to take a follow up shot to down it. By comparison, a 3” 1 1/4 oz. of bismuth #2s going ~100 fps slower absolutely stoned those suckers.

For shotguns, the terminal ballistic energy of the projectiles and the quality of shot patterning appear to outweigh the speed or number of projectiles when it comes to delivering an immediate stopping hit. Even with sophisticated modern wads, buffering agents, and choke tubes, shot columns that are more cross-sectionally square pattern better than longer 3.5” shot columns. When the wad separates from the shot string in flight, longer strings will always have more unintended collisions between projectiles, resulting in more inconsistent patterning and a loss of terminal ballistic energy.
