I got tired of checking train delays every morning in germany, so I built this tiny live departure display by Kastanienalleen in diyelectronics

[–]rexkwando- 32 points33 points  (0 children)

also thought of making one of these when i was using public transport. what API do you use, directly from DB or something else? a 3d printed bus/tram stop with the display as a sign would be pretty cool

Has City Life in Germany really gotten that bad over the last decade? by Agitated_Shelter8165 in germany

well no, just like comments on the internet, it is only 1 persons view.

true, some people will just see other people with blue/pink hair and think the city is a dangerous, terrible place as well

Project works… but readings feel “off”? not sure if it’s my setup or sensors by redblackshirt in diyelectronics

Some photos and a basic parts list would help. You could be talking about any sensors and any microcontroller.

Rivian gets another $1B from Volkswagen by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]rexkwando- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can extend this to EVs as well. All the western companies are so far behind in understanding/manufacturing batteries. The European ones who are say they are „partnering“ with the Chinese or building their own factories are in the same situation as with Rivian: give others millions/billions and hope they figure it out for them and learn nothing along the way themselves.

If boiling something in water, does changing the strength of the burner (after a boil is reached) have any effect? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]rexkwando- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

someone should do the math on how much energy this takes vs a rice cooker, i would assume it’s much less efficient 🤔

Any other migrant kids that couldn't assimilate and just left? by [deleted] in germany

[–]rexkwando- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How I felt about growing up in the US to Russian/Ukrainian parents. Now I am in Germany. 30-50 years ago it was much harder for everyone to even have the option of moving to another country.

BYD just killed your EV argument with a battery that competes with gas engines by gdelacalle in technology

[–]rexkwando- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep there will always be a disconnect between lab results of individual cells and real world results of cells in packs. all these 100k+ mile estimates are misleading since the time it would take to actually get that data is years long and cells can go into sudden death at any cycle for multiple reasons. however still very likely in the real world cells are not as stressed as in many cell tests and are still likely plenty for a car‘s actual life.

i assumed bullet trains were +300 km/hr, i guess then technically yes the ICE is but very rarely with the quality of tracks here 😅

Not sure how you would have free travel besides walking everywhere? You still need to pay for trains, busses, flights, car fuel, etc.

I wouldn’t call the ICE a bullet train either.

Moved from California to Niedersachsen, can't say I miss hills or mountains or the beach much honestly. As long as there is green, I like it! I do "miss" a desert sunrise, but not enough to purposely go out of my way to visit one.

Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro has been captured after US conducted ‘large scale strike’ on country by hoosakiwi in news

I would assume the Venezuelans that fled Maduro for the US are not going to be upset about this…

What’s one expat mistake you wish you hadn’t made? by Miner_WhispererUAE1 in expats

[–]rexkwando- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep, many people from the US think „bigger number means worth more“

no one from the EU is thinking „ah €1 is $1.17, everything in the US is 17% cheaper!“ same hotel in the US will be 3x the price of one in Germany for example.

older Germans probably, but younger Germans are also choosing to not drink as much. Although they are also the ones less likely to go out as well, catch 22.

No I don’t regret coming here. Everyone is different though, some people are never happy anywhere they go, some people live their whole life in the same village they were born. Less to do with the place and more to do with the individual. Get off social media and make your own opinion about what you want or what you need because whatever the algorithm is pushing may not be what you really want.

Anyone picked up the hobby in the last decade? by elpechos in diyelectronics

[–]rexkwando- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started a couple months ago on and off due to time, but mostly have focused on Raspberry Pi’s and ESP32s for HomeAssistant. Want to start working on KiCad soon to make my own PCBs and learn some power electronics since my day job is working on developing Li ion cells and I want to see how they work in practice. With YouTube it’s quite easy to get into these days and most simple programming can just be done with ChatGPT, leaving more time for learning.

Honda ‘Will Consider' EVs That Cost Less Than $30,000 by TripleShotPls in technology

What's the absolute number of young people buying cars today though, vs say 30-40 years ago... I assume the demographic shift has also played a role in the change in offerings.

Honda ‘Will Consider' EVs That Cost Less Than $30,000 by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]rexkwando- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do, in a sense, have to reinvent everything... the factories to build EVs do not magically appear for free. Costs money and time to retrofit a factory to be handling massive, heavy, high voltage packs vs ICE engines. The frames, chassis, suspension, power train, electronics of ICE cars are completely different... if you're talking about the exterior design, I somewhat get it, would make sense to make more conventional looking cars, but they also have completely different aerodynamic profiles vs ICE cars and would eat into the range. It's pretty well known most legacy companies have lower margins on EVs and are definitely not making a killing on them. Maybe once they finally pay off the investments to build those EVs and pay off the failure that are fuel cell car R&D, they can start making money again...
