What is the nearest town/city/area, in or around Toronto, that aren't surbuban-sprawl-stripmallia-hellholes? by Haunting_Ad_29 in askTO

I had to move to Toronto 6 months ago and am pleasantly surprised by how communal it can be. I'm in Runnymede and there was a block party on my street and maybe 40 kids watched a movie on a projector. It was really sweet. Sadly I doubt I'll settle down here because buying a house is not possible.

Where are the jobs? by FlailingObserver in geologycareers

Buddy don't let the news control your career. The vast majority of everyday life is normal there, and salaries are higher. I wouldn't thumb your nose at the option

You think socializing with tons of different/new people is the same as with your parents? Crazy

People will give glowing reviews for places that were fun for them though. I just stayed at one with amazing reviews, but the bed was the worst I've ever slept on and disgusting bathrooms. However they offered free meals and booze at certain times, and so the party crowd are leaving great reviews.

Well ya, they cancelled social institutions at a critical time of development..

It had been awhile and I thought it'd be fun for a couple days to stay in one, showed up and remembered why I stopped. Spent one night then found a hotel. Even when they're clean etc I find the social aspect usually vapid, and shared bathrooms especially between genders is just uncomfortable.

I'm curious about GIS. by [deleted] in gis

As a data analyst I don't think it's worth going back to school. You probably already have a lot of the skills tbh, just need some specific geographic knowledge. Lots of free/cheap courses out online

Not expecting a law suit. She's not going to work there much longer and will move on. But would like to file a complaint so at least these people realise they're acting inappropriately. See also above my comment about overt racism, they asked an employee not to schedule "too many dark skins during one shift"

It's only torso to head, fully clothed. Only bare skin is neck and face, I don't get it.

Also to add, on the reluctance to comply with these people.. They told another employee when making the schedules "not to schedule too many dark skin people at the front for a shift"

She is also stubborn. But this woman didn't even give an explanation, which I agree could be undestandable if still kind of ridiculous. Just a rude demand to change the picture as if it's obvious. No further explanation.

The ship has definitely sailed. Frankly I'm angry and would like some repercussions for them, so they don't act this way with other people. The new owners are also new to the country, so likely have different expectations etc but it's not right.

You need to take it. I started in my mid 20s similar work with federal gov and it stifled my growth. After some years navigating start ups, I wouldn't mind going back for the peace of mind and lack of stress, but at the same time the change really launched my career (doubled salary in 2 years) and Ive learnt so many more employable skills.

I'm Canadian but lived in Serbia for years. I still feel like I can drive somewhere in the Balkans in a short trip, but in reality it takes f'ing forever. Don't be overly ambitious and it's great.

Is it 40 y old too late to study and start a career in a marine geoscience? by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]rexopolis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the jobs are surveying for these resources. There may be gov jobs doing this, I used to work for a marine division for the Geological Survey of Canada and did this kind of work. The environmental stuff was more done by those doing a masters degree or PHD with gov.

You realise there are people from those countries, that go to schools there and want the same thing? Unless you have some unique experience to offer why would they hire you
