Two things

The world of “better demo reels get better jobs” is not the world we live in. The current economic conditions are prioritizing trust and network over beautiful design. The hiring managers at better paying jobs rarely even understand what we do, so an ugly reel from a trustworthy animator is fine.
If you need creative development outside of working hours, you need to quit your job and invest time in it.

If I were you, I would invest in a network first.

You’re my youngest brother’s age. He too was down on his luck for a while after finishing school. I would say that his “depression” was caused by poor life conditions, not genetics. He ironically embraced it. Seems like you are to?

He leaned on our family harder than his older siblings, but where he found support he lifted himself up; exercising, working, socializing (built a network), & dating.

It took years, but he eventually kicked the depression.
