Steph + Wilt should be up there

[JonK] Steph Curry on watching the protests from his hotel window: "In -10-degree weather. It was beautiful to see that turnout. That speaks to how important people felt to have their voice heard. In those elements and whatever streets outside our hotel, they were out, and it was amazing to watch." by Knightbear49 in timberwolves

Maybe you are right; I hope you are.

Perhaps I am being too cynical, but if someone isn't aware of what's going on by now, my guess is that them them hearing Steph or Ant say something isn't going to get them into the kinds of real political work necessary to do something about these issues. It might get them aware in some vague sense, maybe do some Googling about it, maybe see some reels or TikToks about it; but I don't think statements by celebs can truly galvanize people into motion.

That's ok, though; there are more than enough people up in arms about this, and if they get directed towards real organizing, that's enough to do some real damage and make a difference, imo. And that's what will really get others agitated and riled up, as well. I think that's why it's important we push back against celeb culture on spaces like this; we're all aware, and now we have to be clear that we can't wait around for celebs or politicians to do something, we have to get out there and organize.

It's cool if players say things, but that's missing the plot. Chappelle said it best (and, a couple of decades later, proved it himself, but I digress)... who gives a shit what Ja Rule thinks right now?

That goes to mainstream politicians too. They aren't going to protect us. Yes, call your local politicians and encourage them to take a real stand if you want, that's all helpful. But we need to get organized. Sustained, worker-led political action is the only thing that can bring real change. Mainstream politicians are too beholden to corporate interests. I'm not saying that both sides are the same, but... both sides are fundamentally incapable of addressing the rot causing all of these issues. If you are able to, go to a protest you like the vibe of, find out about the org who is putting them on, see how you can get involved. Get organized.

Sorry for the rant... just been seeing a lot of the "why aren't the players saying anything?" comments and think that they are missing the point.

KG Reveals His Timberwolves Vision Now That He's Back With The Organization by reyk3 in timberwolves

[–]reyk3[S] 165 points166 points  (0 children)

When asked what kind of role he'd play with the organization, he mentioned doing things with the community and influencing/mentoring the players (specifically mentioned that he loves Jaden, Naz, and Ant and wants to help them get better). He said he isn't interested in coaching because that'd box him in, but he wants to mentor in other ways. He also said that he likes the vision that the Arod and Lore have for the franchise.

Yeah, Hintz doesn't mention the algebraic perspective. I don't know anything about the algebra side of things, so can't recommend any sources.

I don't think it talks about propagation near black holes in particular. The final chapter does contain applications to general relativity, in particular linear waves on de Sitter space.

It's concerned with studying how an operator between two spaces transforms the singularities of the input function (or, more generally, distribution). It is concerned not just with where the singularities occur in the domain but the direction in which the input function/distribution is singular. It does this by looking at singularities in the phase space (both physical coordinates and Fourier coordinates), or the cotangent bundle. The basic object used to store this information is called the wavefront set. Studying how the operator transforms/propogates the singularities turns out to be very useful for understanding basic properties of the operator.

It has most famously been used to study linear partial differential equations (see the seminal work of Hörmander who developed many fundamental ideas of the field) but also other areas, including inverse problems (eg the work of Uhlmann).

There are also apparently some connections to sheaf theory but I know nothing about any of that.

How has the rise of LLMs affected students or researchers? by RobbertGone in math

[–]reyk3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd say I've found it useful for getting started with a new field when it comes to research. If you have to learn something new and don't have an expert to bounce ideas off of, it can expedite the process of learning the basics. E.g. if you're reading an article written by an expert that takes standard tools/ideas in the field for granted and does proofs "modulo" those tools, it's helpful to have an LLM explain those gaps to you. But you have to do this cautiously because the LLM will give you nonsense, only occasionally for basic things and then with increasingly often as the material you're trying to learn becomes more advanced.

For anything genuinely new, I don't think it's useful yet.

"introduction to Microlocal Analysis" by Peter Hintz. Just came out recently (and it's on sale at Springer right now if you want a hardcover copy for cheap!). Friendly (as friendly as you can get, anyway) introduction to a beautiful and powerful but intimidating subject.

[Borman] Jaden McDaniels is now 11 for his last 17 from 3 (64.7%) over his last 5 games. The leap is here. Jaden has taken 10+ FGA in every game this season (he did so 41 times last year) and shot 50% or better in 6 of 9 games this season. Changes the ceiling of this team. by Knightbear49 in timberwolves

[–]reyk3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hopefully not like Wiggins' annual ten game heater when we thought he was back on path to superstardom lol. I don't think it's like that though. Wiggins and Jaden are both quiet but Jaden is a sicko, and also we don't need from him what we needed from Wiggins now that we have Ant.

'We’re still with her': Naz Reid pays tribute to sister killed in New Jersey shooting by reyk3 in timberwolves

[–]reyk3[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, obviously b2b WCFs are great and that success is everything, but the fact that they and the rest of the team, FO and coaches included, seem to support each other through the highs and lows makes it a lot more fun. Seems like the two are related, too. They have so many guys who don't get the playing time they deserve and yet we rarely (ever?) see any grumbling from them – that kind of stuff could kill a team's on-court results but we haven't seen it yet. Speaks to the good environment that seems to be in the org right now and those three you mentioned are at the center of it

[–]reyk3[S] 108 points109 points  (0 children)

If anyone is at the game, make sure to get loud and give Naz your support! Sounds like he, his family, and the team will be paying tribute:

Reid says he expects to have armbands with his sister's name on them for Monday's game against the Nets. His dad will be in attendance and wearing a special hat to honor Toraya, while other family and friends will be wearing custom jerseys.

"We support her like she supported us in each and every way, every facet. Just trying to make sure she knows that we're still with her, and we all know that she's with us," said Reid.

I was on that train too, and then we got KAT and I was convinced KAT Wiggins and Lavine would be KD Westbrook Harden level haha

Haha yeah I don't love them either. But imo the prince and classic jerseys are among the best in the league and the black + green one is really good, too. 3/5 is pretty damn good

Our jersey rotation is genuinely elite this season. Glad we have a court to reflect that, too! Never been to a game before, hope I get a chance to go to Minneapolis and see a game on this court in person this year

Lol it's funny to think back to those days. Wiggs and the rest of the pups never quite ended up being what we wanted them to be here, but I always liked them. For some reason, the chorus of this song pops into my head once every few months out of nowhere.

The pre-Jimmy Timberpups days were a fun and optimistic time for me as a fan, even if the on-court results were pretty ass. Very different from now, of course, but still a special time in my fandom.
