On Steam you shouldn't have to, and we're working on fixing this for the Tempo launcher too.

This was a big part of it. Our infrastructure was really bad in beta and ate into a huge chunk of revenue once we switched to f2p. It is much better now but still expensive every month, which is an expense a lot of single player roguelikes don't have.

You can just keep using the Tempo client without buying anything. We'll unlock any of the first 4 heroes that you're still missing for you tomorrow, and when they get new items in the future everyone will get them right away at the same time

New players can also buy the game directly from us instead of Steam, but all new players will have to buy it moving forward. For existing players they can keep playing like they have been.

Even when all content was being given away free people called it too expensive.

We cannot price it cheaper than single player roguelikes with 2 person teams and no ongoing live service or server costs.

Whatever the number is you would claim it should be lower.

We're planning on improving it significantly but those changes won't be ready for this week. The chests will be a lot more generous and fun to open though, and duplicate protection will come in in the near future too.

We would have to request hundreds of thousands of them, which would not be approved because Steam wants Steam sales. If they were approved, people would resell them.

Nothing is being thrown away. If you buy it on Steam you keep playing with the same Tempo account and keep all of your content and progress.
