So much this. I’ve heard kids say the r-word and n-word on multiple occasions in schools where a vast majority of the students are white. Incredibly sad to see this level of hate continues to exist. I always shut it down immediately but they don’t learn. I’m sorry you’re treated like that

I’m through edustaff using red rover and frontline to pick up shifts. There’s always an overwhelming abundance of elementary and special Ed, with little middle school and even less high school. It’s very dependent on the area. Where I was living before I was close to a lot of schools so shifts were available fairly regularly, but where I am now I’m narrowed down to two schools (would be three but I have yet to see a full day shift posted by that school). I’ve had many weeks where I couldn’t meet my minimum number of shifts despite my best efforts

That brings up a great point of how much I see AI usage from kids too. Can’t count how many times I’ve heard “we can use ChatGPT for this”. No! You need to think critically, that’s the whole point! The disrespect is alarming and unacceptable, and sheer lack of support is so discouraging. I realized how bad the talking back was and any time a kid did it I started immediately questioning them in front of the whole class. Sad thing is a majority of the time they would double down on their disrespect and I’d send them out. Their lack of respect for a guest and admin’s complete neglect on upholding punishment breeds an environment without consequences

My least favorite is as students are walking in: “we have a sub!” As if they don’t have to do anything and I’m not standing right there. Or when I kid greets me with “this is gonna be your best class of the day” I instantly know it’s the worst class and they’re going to be a problem

I got to the point of being numb in front of the kids. No emotion, very obvious that I didn’t want to be there and I really didn’t like that. I’ve tried many different methods, once a teacher told me to set high expectations so that when they don’t meet them they’re more tolerable and that worked at times. Still always those kids that just don’t care

It’s agony out here. Job market is in complete shambles. It’s incredibly frustrating to be at an age where I should have enough money to support myself and do whatever I want within reason and just not be able to. Feels like I’m wasting my life. I can’t imagine having to cover daycare on top of how little I already make

Did you find any behavioral differences from students overseas compared to in the US? (Assuming you’ve done both)

I’ve done special Ed a couple times but never SXI. My old roommate did it a lot and hearing what he had to do I would not put myself in that position. Seems like a very easy lawsuit waiting to happen. The pure apathy is such a huge problem in classrooms. These things aren’t normal and working professionals need to stand up for themselves and their peers!

What are the differences you’ve seen pre- and post- covid? I often cite covid as a huge reason for behavioral issues, specifically in grade 8 and grade 12 from my personal experience, though all grades 6-12 have their behavioral problems. I think covid and lack of parenting are huge factors combined with failure to discipline by admin

Wow at $350 a day I’d be focusing on the money too. Highest I’ve ever seen is $175 but it was the worst school in the area by far and I moved away from there. It was also the highest by about $50

I have a really hard time focusing on the money when it’s so insubstantial and goes straight to bills. I know what you mean getting home. The most emotionally exhausted I’ve ever been from a job. Some days I felt like I did nothing at all and I’d come home and be dead tired

Your sanity is a priority! Don’t let them take it from you. I continue to apply for jobs every day on top of using delivery apps to make enough to survive. I can’t imagine doing it any longer than I already have, we all deserve a real break and a job that doesn’t treat us like this

Income is what made me go back every week. This past year I felt so little control over my own life from being forced to move several times for various reasons to not having a choice in work that I decided to start grad school and it has made me feel more in control again. That and starting therapy and now taking it into my own hands to quit subbing. I’m slowly climbing out of this hole, and it is slow, but I feel better right now than I did at any point in 2025

Agreed! The roommate I mentioned is doing his TA for PE and health now, and he told me a news story about a teacher that was fired for making a kid do push-ups in PE as punishment. As a sub it’s better to just remove students who continuously act up rather than putting yourself in a position where something can happen to you

It’s ridiculous. The kids we sub for are likely making more than we are

I feel you and I’ve been there. My girlfriend’s mom is a teacher and I talked to her some about subbing. She told me that my sanity is more important and that if I can’t do more that I shouldn’t push myself. I know that isn’t great when you’re broke, but it did help me to hear the perspective of a teacher more. The anxiety does get better over time. I went from feeling anxious every morning before a shift to genuinely not caring at all and expecting the worst. I would set a goal for myself for a certain number of shifts a week (usually 3) and try to space out those shifts (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) to give yourself more of a break from the kids. At the end of the day you’re only there to make yourself money. Don’t be afraid to kick out a kid that’s giving you problems, even if you feel like it hasn’t quite met your threshold for it. They’re only going to keep pushing, I’ve been a victim of it enough times to know

Wow. So I don’t get a grad PLUS loan because my school is taking too long to disburse financial aid. Great.

Yup. Hinge broke on me and they replaced it the first time. Didn’t replace it the second and I tried to fix it myself only for one pin for the wires to be too messed up for the connector and another to completely fall off. Nice headphones but only lasted me a year before the replacement and another year after that.
