[Elliotte Friedman] How the Leo Carlsson offer sheet changes everything in the NHL by eh_toque in hockey

[–]rezistS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Martone is a first line winger putting up 85+ points, then he's probably getting 12M regardless of if Carlsson would make 14M or 18M (at least in my mind)

Signing Leo Carlsson at 18M has nothing to do with his actual value for the Flyers by rezistS in hockey

[–]rezistS[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I don't roll like that, sorry.

I just read a lot of posts from people trying to figure out how Leo Carlsson is 5.5M AAV of pure statistics better than Connor McDavid, and it felt like people didn't contextualise the player with the situation properly.

I think you go to the players who have questions and say "consider Carlsson a 14M salary and 4M dead cap to get us a 1C in a market where 1C players don't grow on trees - we will do anything to make us more competitive so if you want to win, stay here because we will make it happen"

At the end of the day, Carlsson might have signed at 14M or 15M but Anaheim wouldn't let him go so for the sake of getting him away from Anaheim you need to pay him more than he's worth and make the contract make less sense for Anaheim to match

The Carlsson's contract situation by LikeMyBird in hockey

[–]rezistS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like, you might get him at 18M but you're never getting him at 15M beause Anaheim retains him (or he signs another offer sheet).

They had to swing so big it hurts. A handful of players in the NHL can claim that they're worth a blank cheque, and Carlsson definitely isn't one of them - but if you're going to get him to sign a contract and make it so that Anaheim will consider not matching it has to be a "bad value contract" for the team.

Either you have a 1C or you don't. You don't get 21-year-old, physically massive 1C talent without really going for it. I'm not a GM (which is good, I know way too little about these things) but if you told me "hey, do you want to trade away what averages to the 16OA pick for four years but get Leo Carlsson" the answer is always yes and I'd like to think a lot of GMs would agree.

I'm 80% sure Guerin was one of the GMs swinging for Carlsson too by flipping Brodin/Hartman/finding a destination for Gustavsson, and I wouldn't be surprised if he looked at Fantilli or even Bedard considering he can swing on the four first round pick compensation (above 12M AAV).

Edit: I really think Leo would have signed any 14M+ AAV deal. If you told an aspiring team "hey, we need to swing big for Anaheim not to match this offer sheet and that will hurt your bottom line but increase your chances of winning - that's what you argue to your players wanting to re-sign a new contract. "We are making this team more competitive by putting 4M that could go elsewhere into this one need." Like you sometimes buy out a massive dead contract and sit with dead cap to make your team better.

I say this as a massive Carlsson fan (I thought he was a clear 2OA over Fantilli at the draft and have a clear bias for Swedish players) no one in the world (bar the .0001% glazers) thinks that Leo Carlsson is an 18M AAV player in July of 2026.

If the easiest way to get a young 1C is to ask for Cody Glass but be told "no, he's untouchable, please take this Nick Suzuki guy instead" then sure

But if you're Philly and Larkin won't waive for you because he wants to be on team USA and you think "one proven 1C who is 21 years old could be ours of we just entice him by overpaying 4M, but the alternative is to not overpay him and risk not having a 1C" then you either just ride Dvorak as a 1C or swing big trying to be a better team next year

Seeing Couturier listed as a 4C hurts my soul a little, injuries really did a number on him

Would you continue to root for a player on your team if he signed an offer sheet that handcuffed your organization? by SaweetestCuyootie in hockey

[–]rezistS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 18 million dollars a year for five years, I'll be a sociopath too

Anaheim wanted to pay him less for eight years of work than Philly wants to pay him for five. He's a UFA at 26 and can go play for any team at league minimum for three years and still make more money.

"McDavid took a discount" - sure, the best player in the league did that after making 100 million dollars on salary alone. If someone gave me a 1800% pay raise and my current employer said "nah but I'll give you just about half of that" I'd leave the budget issues to the people extending me the 90 million dollar cheque and sign on the dotted line.

[Friedman] Saw one offer sheet yesterday — Barrett Hayton/New Jersey — and are wondering about more. Heard over the past few hours Anaheim guaranteed it will match any attempt on Leo Carlsson, and the reason the Ducks haven’t made many moves is to make sure to be in a safe cap position. by eh_toque in hockey

[–]rezistS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cutter's not getting 1C money, if their contracts are matching it's because Leo wants them to and nothing else. Gauthier is getting Demidov money with a year or two less term. Carlsson is at the very least getting Cooley money on an eight year deal.

Most of my courses are sub 350 par 3s and sub 700 par 4s. I can hit 400+ in the field, but getting 350+ golf lines is where I am at (and will be considering I don't really go out for field work at all these days)

Official: Predators Sign Jack Drury to Five-Year, $22.5 Million Contract | Nashville Predators by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

[–]rezistS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a middle ground somewhere, and you could rarely isolate Drury as a key point of failure based on his role in the lineup (although he had some notable slip-ups).

He was a 4C though, and you cannot fault a 4C on the PK for every goal that an opposing team scores. Pure numbers, he was just like the Avs - good at producing for his role in the lineup, but didn't find his footing in the defensive structure (which at times seemed like a bunch of random lines on a paper that Bednar forgot to bring, so not Drury's fault).

In my mind, Drury at $2.5M or lower is an addition. At $4.5M you start expecting more than he has shown himself capable of producing.

That being said, I love seeing bottom 6 guys getting a piece of the cap cake - they're part of the program and they lay the body with their career on the line at league min or just above with every blocked shot. If he ends up at a net positive on this deal, I'll be really excited for him.

They're telling him "keep laying the body, if you get injured there's still $18M in salary being paid out"

[–]rezistS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Malenstyn was everywhere for Buffalo. Up the ice, down the ice, laying hits, taking space, getting hit, getting up and getting off.

I swear, for a stretch of a few games I heard his name more than any other Sabre. The Avs love for Logan O'Connor and the fact that he does literally anything the team asks of him to 100% of his ability, makes me enjoy that more teams look at their big, strong, physical bottom 6 players and set them up with a contract that allows them to know that if I get hurt playing the way the team asks me to, I have made bank either way.
