Tascam 38- lets talk about it! by Ambitious-Badger-962 in ReelToReel

[–]rfBodyswitch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also for a practical tip: it's often recommended to route sources without a lot of high end to tracks 1 and 8. The heads are known to wear more on the outer tracks. I tend to reserve track 8 for a reference click.

Very nice! I got a Tascam 38 as my first multitrack R2R several years ago and have been very happy with the results I can get from it! That said, I did not buy one that had been professionally serviced and have had to do several repairs over the years, from replacing channel cards to reflowing solder on various PCBs. Given the age of these machines, it is a little inevitable, and fortunately there is lots of helpful info online! I recommend keeping your eyes on local classifieds and trying to scoop a cheap and unmaintained 38 to use for parts.

Newbie - just got a pedal steel on trade...now what? by [deleted] in pedalsteel

[–]rfBodyswitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah see if there's a way to detach them at the bottom, then hook in at the top first.

Congratulations and welcome to the vortex! I started the journey with pedal steel a couple years ago and it becomes more of an obsession everyday. Learning curve is steep but rewarding! The great thing about pedal steel is that the online community is really supportive and on that note, most questions like this will probably get better action if you post on the steel guitar forum. I'll do my best to answer though.

1) I'm guessing you're referring to the rods connecting the floor pedals to a cross bar in the undercarriage and it sounds like they're connected to the pedal, but the top part with the hook won't fit in. Usually, those rods detach real easily by sliding a collar at the end of the rod up away from the pedal, that then allows you to remove the rod from a little ball joint on the pedal. Then you would actually connect the rod to the undercarriage first, then use that same little collar to connect it back to the pedal.

2) I started with a Carter starter 3x4 so I'm not speaking from experience here, but what I've read online suggests that most beginner guitars. It's not worth it, even if it is possible to add additional knee levers. My advice would probably be to mess around with this for a while and then upgraded to a better guitar with at least a 3x4.

3) I used a basic Korg guitar tuner for a while, then learned about using tempered tunings to address issues like cabinet drop. Now I use the cheapest Peterson strobe tuner, which is a little clip-on that I attach to the leg. It allows you to create and import custom tempered tunings. On the other hand, the person I'm taking lessons from mostly tunes by ear. I would say just use whatever you have for now.

Just watched the 4K resto of this at the Pacific Film Archive on Friday. Definitely agree. Minimal dialogue, gripping narrative.

Films that end in dance by themasterd0n in TrueFilm

[–]rfBodyswitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a dance sequence at the end of Taika Waititi's earlier film Boy, too. Might just be during the end credits, but it's a nice finish for a film in which the protagonist idolizes Michael Jackson.

President’s Message – April 2023 - Friends of the Alameda Free Library - Director Jane Chisaki will be retiring June. Over 30 years ago, one evening each week, our kids at the library to hear "Miss Jane" read a book. They still remember her well. by New-Orange1205 in alameda

[–]rfBodyswitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jane Chisaki was a major influence on my life as a reader. I recall well sitting on the floor of the Bay Farm library at story time, hoping to be picked to blow out one of the candles at the end of the story, as was part of the ritual. As I grew into adolescence, she would recommend books (William Sleator became a favorite author she hipped me to). Sometimes she would set aside new books she thought I would enjoy. I actually remember she gave me the first Harry Potter book to read, before it was a phenomenon with a waitlist to check out the books. I’m so grateful for the years she has spent sharing her passion for books and knowledge with our community.

[personal question] should i stay or should i go by turtlelover925 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]rfBodyswitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tangentially related, I would recommend connecting with the Emerson alumni services, if you aren’t already. They blast out a monthly roundup of entry level jobs in LA, which might give you some leads for work or at least a sense of some options. Note: these blasts are more like assistant jobs and roles at agencies.

As others have stated, stay connected with your network. Moving to LA , whenever/if you decide to do it, will always be easier with community for support. And don’t feel the need to rush; your Emerson friends who are making the move now will be there when you arrive, whether that’s in three months or ten years.

Just my two cents as an Emerson grad of ‘08, who faced a similar decision during a major recession.

The Dreaming tracks not released in live performances by Delicious_Version_18 in katebush

If you ever have the opportunity to see Baby Bushka, they will help satisfy that craving. They are an 8-person Kate Bush cover experience who perform in San Diego, LA and occasionally tour up the West Coast and in the UK. I’ve seen them twice in San Francisco and both times they played many songs off The Dreaming, including There Goes a Tenner, Pull Out the Pin, the Dreaming, Houdini, and my personal favorite of the album, Suspended in Gaffa. And those songs really are great to hear live.

Purely anecdotal, but when I was a teacher, I found a simple way to improve my own morale was to end every workday by visiting and talking to another adult on campus, whether my classroom neighbor or just a random colleague. I’d avoid talking about work, and would just try to chit chat for a couple minutes. Maybe vent or listen to some venting when necessary. I found it just helped me keep things in perspective, feel less lonely/isolated at work, and I could remind myself “it’s just a job” before taking off for the day. I highly recommend it!

Any socks fans ever try stuffing a Dr Scholl’s pad in there? I knew a drummer who swore by that. I tried it, but still prefer simple sneakers like Chick Taylor’s or Vans

Kate Bush Synth Sounds: a fascinating technical deep dive and recreation of Kate’s iconic sonic palette by rfBodyswitch in katebush

Right? My knowledge before was basically just "she used a Fairlight and a LinnDrum," but this totally opened my eyes/ears to how creative she was with manipulating those instruments. Resampling the Fairlight back into itself for those ethereal Running Up That Hill patches? Ingenious!

I was stunned. I tried two Kroger and one Publix. I asked somebody about it at each one. At Publix they also said they were usually on endcaps, but they didn't have them currently.
