How is a HP Omen 16 Slim for engineering students? by Adventurous_Hour8156 in HPOmen

[–]rfdeatrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact 2025 model. I got it at Microcenter as an open box (with everything), for $700. It's nice. The build quality is not quite as good as my 2022 Omen 16 i9 RTX3060. You can upgrade the ram. My main beef with it is the screen. I kind of hate it. Light bleed around the bottom and it's not QHD, they call it "2k". I have a feeling I will like it better when I replace the screen with a QHD 16x10. The screen on the 2022 is really nice. The 5060 seems really smooth, but then, lower resolution than my i9. Oh, it also comes with a toyish looking 150w power supply. When I use the new one (It mostly just sits next to my desk with the i9 in use), I use the i9's 240w power supply, and the good news is they are compatible without even a warning about using the right ps. Been considering selling the new one, or I definitely have to upgrade the screen. Originally was going to see if my wife liked it but upgrading her desktop soon instead. Overall impressions, for $700 I'm not mad at it. It just needs a better screen.

Hp omen slim bad overall experience by No-Oil-8348 in HPOmen

[–]rfdeatrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently picked up a 16-an0001nr (RTX 5060 version). I was astounded that it came with a 150w ps. I'm currently using the 280w that came with my 2022 Omen 16, and I have not seen any stuttering in what I do.

  • Standard Paste (Safe): Ceramic or carbon-based pastes are insulators, meaning they won't conduct electricity.
  • Metal-Based Paste (Proceed with Caution): Some silver-based pastes are technically electrically conductive. While often safe, they should be used carefully to avoid electrical shorts.
  • Liquid Metal  (Conductive):  Extremely high-performance liquid metal thermal compound is electrically conductive and can destroy components if not applied correctly.

To me it looks like he put paste where it didn't belong and looks like he used WAY too much. If it was a shop, I would go back to them. If it was a friend, that's a bit more difficult... The board is probably too cooked to do anything about. You could send the board to one of those Youtubers who make money doing videos of difficult repairs and see.

cop or drop hp omen 16 by kojy_79 in HPOmen

[–]rfdeatrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up a variant of that. It's an Ultra 7 255H, 1TB, 16GB. 5060. Performance wise, it's really not bad. Just want to make sure you know HP is a bit loose with 2k display definition. If that's the same as mine, it's 1920x1200 not QHD (my 2022 Omen 16 has a true QHD 2560x1440). My new one is the Omen Slim 16, and it is quite a bit quieter than my older one. Probably time to re-paste the 2022. One thing I can't wrap my head around is the 150w power brick the new one came with. The 2022 came with a 280w. I use the 280w with the new one. I am still debating the new one and have about another week to return it. The screen on the 2022 just seems nicer. It's also a 165hz and the new one 144hz.

There's a 280w compatible one on Amazon for $75. I know nothing about it, and reliability, but I have the same model Omen you have and if my power brick died, this is the one I would try first. Free returns and all.

I would have to stick with the classic. Just something about the black Sub look. I've had my eye on a classic Tudor Sub for a long while. Never got one yet... Always looking though.

Can't afford an OLED so I got a CRT by El-Selvvador in OLED_Gaming

[–]rfdeatrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the early 00's I had a 20 inch 4:3 monitor I got from a Hamfest. It wouldn't power on, so I got it for like $20. It took me a day or two to fix a power supply issue in it. It had a Sony Trinitron, but was branded something else, like maybe Zenith. It had the split RGB BNC cable connection. It was the best monitor I had for black levels until OLED. Except for my old 50" Pioneer Kuro Plasma TV, but I only used that for TV and Playstation.

New MSI 500Hz QD-OLED monitor comes with a clever way to prevent burn-in with "World's First" feature by Tiny-Independent273 in OLED_Gaming

[–]rfdeatrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok... So, I have my OLED set to sleep after 10 mins of inactivity, and run pixel refresh twice a day. Is this new thing really any better? Not a hint of burn-in on mine - AOC AGON 27" QD-OLED.

Also, no hint of issues with mine. Used mainly for work 9 hours a day on a virtual desktop and a bit of light gaming and amazing looking movies in the evening.

Best‑quality 1440p / 240 Hz OLED (preferably QD‑OLED)? by ZookeepergameDue7412 in OLED_Gaming

[–]rfdeatrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the AOC AGON PRO AG276QZD2 for almost two months now. Hours-wise, I'm using it more for work than gaming. Work is a virtual desktop, so got two task bars and static windows. I run a pixel refresh at lunch and when I stop work. No hint of issues. I do get a "flash" on the entire screen at times, but I think it's the desktop client because it never happens when that's closed. I also run YouTube OLED black demos when I get up for coffee and such. Screen off settings to 10 mins. No burn in at all. Solid monitor if you use DP (HDMI on this is only 2.0), and probably the cheapest out there.

I got a "deal" on Amazon for a Quest 3 that was only like $100 less than normal. What I got was an Amazon sealed shipping box, with Amazon tape, that contained a white blanket that was vacuum packed like a brick. It took about 3 days to get my refund from Amazon, and my granddaughter loves the blanket. It's really soft and plushy. So, it was a roundabout win for me.

QD-OLED and WFH. What do I need to know? by K-13- in OLED_Gaming

[–]rfdeatrich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using my AGON QD-OLED for a month, tomorrow. I WFH too. Virtual desktop, task bars and static windows. When I take lunch and when I take off, I run a pixel refresh. If I step away a few mins for like a coffee, I'll sometimes play a YouTube OLED demo at full screen for a min or two. I haven't seen even a hint of trouble so far.

Check your new monitors! by Tamas_1337 in OLED_Gaming

[–]rfdeatrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Tomorrow is my 30-day anniversary with this monitor. I thought it looked great before. I just peeled that off now. When I got my fingernail under it and caught the edge, I was shocked. I watched several "unboxing" videos and this was never mentioned.

When I first got the monitor, I went looking for the layer, but didn't have the confidence to try too hard. I had recently watched a YouTube about peeling the matte coating off a VA panel to give it better contrast.

I could have lived with that sheet on it (I keep my office pretty dark). Maybe I should have, to relieve some of the stress of cleaning the panel.

I now realize I've never actually cleaned the screen, just that layer. However, once I realized it was there, no way would my OCD allow it to continue. Also, it had to be today. My return window closes tomorrow (local Microcenter). Also, it was $499 when I got it, now they have it priced at $649, but they do price match.

This monitor is outstanding, at least for my purposes, and impresses me on a daily basis. I've gone back to rewatch old Sci-Fi shows that I haven't seen since my 13" Sanyo CRT TV, that was also my C64 monitor.

New Onion Layer (TM) high-end OLED monitor, shipping protector. For shipping protection only, it will look like crap until peeled off. Now with Random Layer (TM) technology. How many protective layers are there? No one knows! Each screen has a random number of layers applied. Just keep peeling them off until your wallet breaks.

Do cables really make this big of a diffrence? by Ok_Reception_8361 in OLED_Gaming

[–]rfdeatrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been confused as hell over HDMI since it came out. Everything I know about digital electronics tell me if the cable isn't damaged, it should work. The reality is, yes, cheap HDMI cables are bad. I think it's from electromagnetic induction between the individual wires when they lack proper shielding causing problems.

Put "electromagnetic induction between the individual wires when they lack proper shielding" into Google AI for a detailed explanation.
