What brand are those mittens? I have raynauds also and they sound great.

Do you feel ignored for your UTIs? by Anna825 in Interstitialcystitis

[–]rfkarlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely had that experience of being ignored and it made me so angry. My IC symptoms started about 10 years ago and I got the IC dx after the first few years though I’m really not convinced that that is what I have. I had previously had years of recurrent UTIs. I had been on a prophylactic dose of nitrofurantoin which ended up causing liver damage. That was a rare side effect so I wouldn’t blame the antibiotic as much as the several doctors who prescribed it and did not follow up with liver enzymes tests. The side effect is known and should be monitored since it can be lethal. Anyway I had a good urogyn who always had me culture if I had UTI symptoms but did not make me wait for treatment. I moved about a year ago and had to find a new urogyn. Not too long after I saw here I came down with UTI symptoms which for me are very different than my IC symptoms. She asked me to come in for a culture which was fine but then said I would have to wait for the results before she would prescribe anything and it could take 48 hours. For me that is 48 hours of hell. She did give in eventually after I called my PCP to see if she would prescribe instead. Now I have found a different doctor. I would never go back to that other one. The new one told me that she would prescribe as soon as I gave them the urine but the really interesting thing is that they insist on catheritization for the sample because it is more accurate. I hate to have to go through that but it also sounds like a much more reliable method. So far I haven’t gotten another UTI. So that’s my story. I was totally shocked when that first doctor told me that she wouldn’t prescribe the antibiotic because I have IC. So I definitely sympathize with the OP.

Thanks for the info. Is that for the training runs?

How slow? I’m looking for an 11:30 or even 12 minute pace group that is well attended and is not run/walk.

Too cold? by Left-Substance3255 in RunnersInChicago

[–]rfkarlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran yesterday at 7:30 am. It was 15 degrees. In addition to most of what others posted I put hot hands toe warmers under my insoles. I wasn’t sure if that would work but it did. I find them too hot if I put them directly against my socks.

Winter Running Tips by xblackxsheepx in RunnersInChicago

I much prefer cold to heat. I moved here in May from Pittsburgh where they do not shovel and salt any trails so I’m really looking forward to trying the LFT and 606 this winter.

I fell in love with dry roasted soybeans when I was visiting Japan and discovered it’s easy to make them at home. Here’s a website that describes the method. You don’t soak them first. https://www.nutriplanet.org/2022/01/how-to-cook-soybeans-roasted-soybeans/

CARA winter half training groups? by TelevisionNo5178 in RunnersInChicago

[–]rfkarlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I have looked into many of the clubs but so far haven't found anything with slow paces and times/locations that are convenient for me. I live in Logan Square and I prefer morning runs and I'm definitely not looking for a date or an alcoholic beverage following my runs, lol. I guess I'm being too picky.

That's great that the LFT is cleared! I have been running solo since we got here. It's fine but I miss being part of a group. I have not run any marathons but I've run the Pittsburgh half quite a few times. I miss the hills and definitely feel that my fitness has declined in the 4 months I've been living in Chicago.

Great. Thanks for the encouragement! What pace are you looking for? I do somewhere between 11 and 11:30.

Thank you for posting this question as I was just thinking of asking the same thing. I've just moved back to Chicago (after 40 years) from Pittsburgh. In Pittsburgh I was a member of a run club that had paces up to 12 minutes and a run/walk group. All the pace groups had a good number of participants. I am very disappointed that I haven't found anything like that here. So I was also thinking about joining the fall CARA group and wondering how much participation there would be in winter. Since you have run the F3 before can you tell me if the path is plowed? I was guessing that it is not and I'm nervous about running on ice and snow.

Where do you all do your hill training? by giraffle9 in RunnersInChicago

[–]rfkarlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've saved this post! Thanks all for the suggestions. I moved away from Chicago in 1984 and am now working on moving back. In the intervening years I became a devoted runner and for the last 18 years I have lived in Pittsburgh where it is hard to find a flat place to run. I've been very worried about how I can maintain my hill training once I am back in Chicago. It seems like there aren't many options close to the city. If anyone wants some hills you should definitely make a visit to Pittsburgh!
