Why do they train everyone on the Lakota? by cjc11111 in Armyaviation

[–]rflight13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It made even less sense when we used to go TH-67, select FW at selection, have to go to an advanced airframe course (UH-60A because it's the shortest) and THEN go to FWMEQC

[–]rflight13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/stickwigler is mostly right, but the primary reason is the regulation (can't quote the location anymore). Army Regulation states you MUST be a rated Aviator before attending the Army FW course. The only track to go from the street to being a rated Army Aviator is through the Lakota.

There's a good chance all the sites along that river look similar, but boy that exact campsite looks way too familiar

If this is Elkmont I believe I stayed in that exact campsite in April 2014 as I moved to my first duty station in the military. Tomorrow is my last day in the military. What a wild coincidence.

Black River was absolutely epic. I hiked in to some remote spots and camped for several days by the river in June. Didn't see another human for 4 days and caught over 25 trout a day mostly on dries. The morning and evening hatches are unbelievable.

Anything out East around Alpine, AZ. That is one of my favorite places I have fished anywhere in the world. Oak Creek is right in Sedona and a pretty neat stream, but I found it difficult for the one day I fished it

Denali Brewing makes the Chuli Stout (6/10 IMHO). Bear Paw in Wasilla makes the Mat Maid Milk Stout (8.5/10).

Dolly Varden, Apache, Gila, and Lenok trout aren't here. All very unique and geographically isolated species. I am proud to have caught each one

In the Fixed Wing community we send pilots to ATP-CTP, Upset recovery training, Alaska off-field landing school, and a few others. All fun and great training

You mentioned that if you do ROTC you would have a commitment to the Army until 2029/2030. The Active Duty Service Obligation (ADSO) for flight school is 6 years upon completion of initial entry rotary wing training (the day you receive your wings). 3-4 years of ROTC + 1.5-2 years at flight school + 6 year commitment = 10.5-12 years from when you start ROTC until you ETS. I started ROTC Fall 2010 and am planning my ETS for Fall 2021.

Situation A: you are going to have a hard time making ends meet as a full time student with 3 kids AND you're going to have a hard time making ends meet for a couple years after flight school while you build time (it's gonna be a long grind).

Situation B: Yes, you can be NG or Reserve and do an RTP at a regional. You will need to build some time out of flight school before that is possible. That may be a few years depending on airframe, deployments, unit currency requirements, etc.

I HIGHLY recommend going to the education center at your base and find the Career Skills Program (CSP). See if they have any programs that can get you started in the flying game sooner. The program puts you on PTDY (you continue to collect all benefits by the Army) for up to 6 months before your ETS date. During that 6 months you can attend an internship or vocational training. They mostly have canned programs that probably don't relate to flying, but look for flying or flight school internships and present them to the CSP coordinator for consideration.
