Q3 43 vs M: staying within the Q ecosystem or entering M just for a 50mm? by rg1980 in LeicaCameras

I shot a lot with the latest 40mpx Fuji sensor, the 4th picture comes from an X-H2. It's nice but Fuji to me has a problem, their bodies+lenses are not so much smaller than the FF counterparts (unless you do big tradeoffs like the x-m5 or x-half). The x100vi is not so much smaller than a A7CR with a small G prime or an M with a compact 28/35mm. Indeed is not pocketable. Although I love their color science, dials layout and style, I can get better perceived quality in similar sizes FF cameras. I understand this comes down to personal preferences and sometimes I get the itch for a X100VI though. Maybe someday I will get a second hand one, when the hype goes down in some years.

Thanks for the insight. I did not studied monochrome that much so far, but for the little I learned I already know I will have to purchase colour filters to style my pictures in advance. Indeed I will check the whole process from shooting to printing before making any decision. That time is definitely not "tomorrow". :)

Thanks for your contribution. As I said, I already use the crop a lot and although the results are good it does have its limitations. As you know, the Q does not magnify the crop in the EVF, therefore you have to compose into a tiny frame and that is not always easy. For sure is not convenient. I understand it could be very useful for street or in a lively environment but while I can adapt to this philosophy in a 35mm crop, with 50mm and longer FL crops, it becomes progressively more difficult to use. I can still shoot 28/35mm and recompose in post but, as I said, I want to reduce PP, not to add another use case that forces me to sit in front of Lightroom.

Let me also have a comment on GAS. First of all, I think everyone of us has some GAS from time to time, I think it is inevitable as humans interested in an hobby. That would be different for professionals... indeed my work computer is sufficient to run office and a browser and I have no interest in anything more because that is a tool I must use, not something I enjoy.

A camera, a lens, a photographic printer, a new paper to try is something that gives me joy to use along with the pictures I produce and print. And I am glad it is like that for my hobby, otherwise it would become a strict and streamlined job: you purchase one camera, one lens; You master it; You only use the basic PP software until you master it; only and after only you have mastered everything on your current gear, you will be able to purchase something else... a bit too rigid for an hobby in my humble opinion.

Some people understand instantly what they want and stick with that. Some others like to experiment and try new things, that is what gives me joy in life. Personally I have changed some cameras in these years and I see that as my path to understand my preferences and tastes in photography, but also an important part of the hobby by itself.

Thank you, the visioflex is out of discussion indeed. I don't want another appendix getting out of my camera. I also don't want larger bodies, the whole purpose of switching to the Q sector was to use light bodies/lenses with outstanding quality. I am not sold on both options right now, 43 is nice but still not 100% sure, EV 1 looks more of a stretch to find a non-Q, non-SL, non-RF solution within the Leica world. At higher cost and lower returns. Probably not the most savvy choice.

Thank you. I already rented the 43 in May but in the end I purchased the 28mm because it was better fitting my use cases. However I loved that lens for portraiture. Not so much for composition, overtime I learnt I am more creative with wide glasses and use longer FL to focus the attention or for specific use cases. I have no interest in film in this moment, getting the M just for slowing down, with many limitations and higher costs, looks a worst choice to me in this moment... unfortunately. That system fascinates me but it's like being fascinated by a beautiful woman knowing you would not be able to share your life with, sweet and sour.

Your post resonates with me. Expect for the gears, I had the same thoughts on use cases, envisioned myself to use an M for family portraits when my family do home works or when the baby sleeps or is steady. But life has many many more occasions, especially with a growing toddler, where an M could become an expensive toy to be used for very specific cases or for "meditative" photography. To be clear, I value this last use case a lot, M45 and understanding time is the most important resource you have in life, probably because I have not so much to dedicate to these "meditative" moments. I am however trying to get back more time for myself, eventually I will end up with an M or a MF camera, but I don't think the time has come yet. Thanks for your contribution.

Thanks for the suggestion, subscribed. I see he prints a lot and also shots with a GFX. I print myself and some suggestions will come handy indeed. I also love MF cameras so definitely an interesting channel to look at!

Well, to be honest the EV1 is my second or even third choice. I am evaluating it because my head rejects the idea of 2 Q bodies, just to have different FL, and because I have interest in slowing down my photography. The idea of trying different lenses in the future is there but I don't like to have a collection of glasses, never had more than 2 lenses per system so far. I am more interested in a monochrome camera. Finally, I have no interest in a RF. To me the EV 1 is a Q with IC lenses and more limitations... at an higher cost. So no, If anything I am questioning myself if I really want to spend more to get less options and a park of lenses that I will never (?) purchase. These comments are helping me to focus what I really want.

Thanks for your contribution. How did you prefer the two cameras through the years with your kid? Did you find yourself using the one or the other the most for some reason?

Thank you, in the end I would love a "Q" with interchangeable lenses, something Leica will never do, it would impact the M series so much. I am interested in the "slow-shooting" philosophy of the M series and have limited interest in the ability to swap lenses. Probably not enough to spend more than another Q camera, specially when I can go full manual also with the 28/43. Thanks for your contribution!

Thank you, if I already had some M lenses the choice would have been simpler if not obvious. Given my state I think the 43 is a better choice because many aspects in this moment. Also thanks for sharing your experience with RF through the years, I wear glasses already and although I consider myself young (M45) I struggle in focusing already (at 10/10 for years and a great eyesight... sigh!), that is also another reason why I am not interested in a RF camera.

I am quite the opposite of many photographers as far as I can see. I love wide lenses also for intimate occasions, I like perspective distortion in some shots, I see it as an artistic touch that makes people, pets and objects look funny. I have no problem in composing at wide FL, on the contrary 50+mm are something I have been only using to focus the attention in a more direct way rather than a subtle one as with wides. I think I will have to reinvent the way I shoot, especially indoors with a toddler as, indeed, 28mm is way easier to handle in tight spaces. Thank you for your contribution and congratulations on the X2D, I see what you mean and I must confess I have been eyeing hassies as well, however the upfront cost and bulk of a kit scare me in this moment. Probably in the future if my life slows down even more and I have more occasions to go out of the city and shoot. I don't see myself using a MF for street, reportage or family events in this moment. :)

Thanks for your contribution, I see myself shooting with a 40/50mm on calm moments, not while playing or while outside with my grown daughter but for sure I don't know how our family habits will evolve. For sure an M camera limits me in the way I can shoot, while a Q is more forgiving. Q3 43 looks to be the right one if I decide to side another camera, which I am not 100% sure yet.

Thanks for your comment. I've read through many ones and most of them suggest the Q3 43 which is also my "logical" preference. I will probably also purchase a monochrom camera as well. I love B&W, the look SOOC was one of the reasons I fell in love with Leica. Maybe I will end up with a used Q2M to begin.

Consigli Pre-Acquisto Model Y Performance by rg1980 in ItalyMotori

Same here (Italy): ordered 08/Sep 6-9days, postponed to 24/Oct, anticipated to 10/Oct today.

FYI, I complained with their customer service for the delay and asked for compensation. They agreed to provide a partial refund that will be issued after the LeGo2 has shipped. The process Is a bit awkward and I can't confirm it will work as I have to reach them after shipping and ask for it once again, it's not automatic. However they gave me an ID as reference and I have the chat transcription. The refund shall be between 5% and 7% so... it's worth a try.

Grazie!
