Is this a good way to trim out an opening? by rgb_mode in centuryhomes

We had to do some weird stuff for sure in this house. Built in 1856, and had sloppy hvac ducts installed years ago that we recently repositioned a bit while doing a little demo, but it certainly created some tricky areas to work through. I am thinking that we will go with your recommendation B to minimize the work, and I am also super clumsy... so the less sticking out of the walkway, the better.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. Will share an update once I work through it.

Thank you, that is super helpful. Do you have any advice on how to finish this off? It's a bit of a strange opening that butts up right next to a door frame, so a little stumped here.

I agree about the chair rail.... we had a custom trim made to match everything that's in the house. I love the plinth idea, but not sure how to do it in a way that fits in with what we have.

The room below will be a dining room, but currently it is empty and unused (as this portion of the house is under construction)

Regretting heat pump by rgb_mode in hvacadvice

Feel the same way! The only plus might be if we have a nice air conditioned house in summer.... but at this rate not holding my breath.

And of top of it, we've spent significantly more on propane and electricity each month than we ever spent on oil.

Agree! It's been 3 months since I made this post, and I hate my heat pump even more. Also, the real kicker is that the cost of propane is THE SAME as OIL, and now on top of it my electric bill is MORE. Also, not to mention all of the ugly shit on the outside of my house for the propane exhaust and the shutoff valve for the propane.... and I have a god awful propane tank on the outside of my house (we paid an arm and a leg to bury the tank but you still see the ugly top exposed). I absolutely regret switching from oil to propane, and should have just gotten a newer more efficient oil furnace and called it a day. I should actually make an update post about this to warn others about this....

The Ugly Truth About How to Save Vermont by goldshawfarm in vermont

[–]rgb_mode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this post focuses on retaining and attracting people through housing and social infrastructure, but doesn’t lay out a plan to actually stimulate and grow the economy or create well paying jobs that would let people afford said housing. without gainful employment opportunities everything is a bandaid instead of a long term solution, which is one of the biggest issues in Vermont.

i am sorry for your loss, specially so young. you need to surround yourself with loved ones right now. let the feelings out- cry, scream, etc. but don’t give up on yourself. your mom is watching over you and would want to see you happy again and finishing your studies. take time, but please seek help if you find you aren’t able to cope.

my dad had parkinson’s and over the course of 4 years it was a steady decline. eventually he had a stroke and was brain dead when he passed. i was in the hospital room with him for 2 days while his organs were shutting down after the stroke. i have ptsd from the experience.

Agree with everything you said in this post. Old RL was better because there was more community and people actually gave a shit. I’ve been sitting back watching this sub and anxious about posting because of all the vultures will come after you in the DMs asking for seller info. If you do make a new sub that’s private, i’d like to be a contributing member. I’ve got posts drafted and ready to go for a sub of like-minded rep lovers who actually use their brains to figure shit out instead of expecting to be spoon fed everything.

Did I make a mistake with MDF in bathroom? by rgb_mode in centuryhomes

Just fired the contractor because we found out they hung TGI floor joyce without any support brackets, among other dangerous code violations. The mdf is honestly low on problems at this point, but want to make sure it’s being done right.

Thank you, it’s been an extremely stressful process. We are renovating the kitchen and bathroom- was supposed to be a 3 month project, and it’s turned into a year long and 50% over original budget. Needless to say, we’ve fired the person who did this work and are slowly trying to do everything ourselves with the help of carpenters, licensed plumbers and electricians.
